Code 13 - O2 Sensor

Postby tweetdriver63 » Wed 21.05.2008, 23:51

First, I couldn't figure out how to read the stored codes using elanscan.

My CEL has been coming on intermittently recently. I just checked the codes the old fashioned way, with a paper clip.

Here's what I get:
12
12
12
13
13
13
24
24
24
12
12
12

I know the 12's are just beginning and end markers for diagnostic mode.
The 24's are for the VSS. That's because the tab part of my VSS, with the printed circuit connections, broke off. I'm not in a big hurry, but if anybody has a spare VSS lying around.....
The 13's are an O2 sensor. My question is how do you know which sensor? I'm assuming that like every other car I've had, there's more than one. Usually there's a forward and an aft sensor. Is there anyway to know which is the problem besides replacing them trial and error style?

I suppose that takes the guesswork out of it.

Now, next question. The GGLC parts cross-reference says the O2 sensor is the same one on the Impulse Turbo. Is that correct? It makes sense to me.

Found it. Yes. It's the Impulse one. I guess I should look at the Wiki before I post more often.

BTW, if there are any other US owners needing one, or just wanting to get a spare for a good price, I grabbed this one off ebay.
There were actually some others that were cheaper, but either I didn't see the right part number, or they appeared to be universal types. I was looking for OE, brand name (Bosch or NGK), cheaper than my local stores, and 3 day or less delivery. This seller fit the bill, with almost 100% feedback.

Chris,

you'll need an O2 sensor socket for your breaker bar and lots of penetrating oil -- expect it to be a bear to get out! Then if its a tweety bird you'll be pleasantly surprised.

be sure to check your spark plugs if needed--a fouled O2 sensor can mess other things up. In fact be sure to see the troubleshooting sheet from the Elan manual for that particular code . . .

I looked all through the manuals and there's no troubleshooting guide for code 13. Everything starts at code 14. I guess I'll just go ahead with replacing the O2 sensor.

Since the CEL started its intermittent activity, I've also noticed some stalling. It only happens when I'm approaching a turn/intersection and I clutch. When the engine goes to idle, it sometimes just dies. I'm assuming the bad O2 sensor data to the ECM is causing this, otherwise it's a hell of a coincidence.

I also saw in the manuals that the VSS data to the ECM is used with the Air Cond, the EGR, and the idle air control valve. There's also a little chart showing what data is used to control what systems, and it shows vehicle speed used to control fuel delivery, idle speed, spark timing, EGR control, air cond, and check engine. It would seem that little ole VSS does a lot more than I was led to believe when I mentioned in another thread that the tab on it with its electrical connections had broken off. Tomorrow I'll have to find somebody who can fix those connections for me.

Well you learn something every day Chris, thanks for that.

From the limited ElanScan data I've seen, the sensor usually suffers from a loss of output swing (1 to 4V) so it should just be a simple matter of changing it.
