Error code 15

Postby andrewrenouf » Sun 01.06.2008, 14:35

Dear All

Well it's only been 12th February since my Elan broke down so I thought I'd better do something about it!

I posted a "help" message on 12th February and have finally read the error code which is 15. I can see from the Wiki what this means but why would the car run fine for 10 minutes and stop working evey time? -

(The issue is that the car starts fine, runs for 10 mintes and dies. It wont start until it is completely cool).

Any ideas? - I'm missing my Lotus now .....it's Summer and my other car is too boring!!

Thanks for any help

Andrew,

The behaviour is what I'd expect if the CTS is not connected or faulty: The ECU reads the CTS and reads a resistance in excess of 100kohm and flags up the '15' error code. This corresponds to a temperature lower than -40°C and at this temperature, the ECU makes the air/fuel mixture very rich. This is tolerable when the engine is cold, but as it warms up there is just too much fuel being injected and the engine stalls.

If you haven't got a spare Coolant Temperature Sensor, you could try disconnecting the Coolant Temperature Sender (the one that drives the temperature gauge on the dashboard) and wire up a connection to the CTS plug - the resistance is not matched 100% but is a lot closer than it being open circuit, so it should allow the engine to run longer than 10 minutes!

Keep us posted.
