Thanks for the b+e information which worked as planned. Except when I opened the boot Paul's keys were not in there so he must have dropped them somewhere along the street. So he has had the car towed in and the garage are trying to match up an ignition key.
One problem solved and the next appears. However cannot blame the car for this one.

Gang
I have been asked a specific S2 boot key question by Lotus.
Can anyone help please?
Just spoken to XXXXX XXXXXXXX he owns a 1995 S2 RHD.
Recently his boot lock needed to be forced to gain access and he now needs a new barrel & keys, ideally to match his original key.
My Q to you Simon is has anyone in the Lotus Elan Central group sourced a new barrel to the existing key and if so can you help XXXXX please?
We only keep Doors/boot lock set A100U6033F which sadly is prior to his build and may not be an easy option.
I've copied XXXXX on this mail and look forward to your reply, I guess I owe you another one now!
All the best

My reply to Neil's inquiry was:
Hi Neil
I don’t think you owe me anything, because I’m not sure we can help.
If I remember correctly (and please remember I’m only mere SE owner) the S2 uses the same key for all locks (?).
SEs are separate as you know.
I don’t think we have an answer other than to revert to SE format with another key for the boot, But, I’ll ask on the forum, or maybe XXXXX would like to ask on the forum himself.
I’ve started the ball rolling, here:
there then followed a link to this thread.

Correct - one key for all locks.
When I dropped in at the Vauxhall 'recyclers' he reckoned it was a Vauxhall mix and match... I can't remember which models but likely to be parts from Carlton/Cavalier/Corsa.
Sorry I can't help any more.

Confirming 1 key for all locks.
The attached pic may help someone to identify the S2 boot latch mechanism origins or source a similar item, but note the key lock barrel is a separate item to the latch mechanism.

I probably won't be very helpful but; keys are vauxhall items, any decent keymaker (or whatever you call it) should recognize it. Actually it looks the same with my uncles Astra from early 90s. As for the barrel I don't know but maybe a vauxhall unit could be modified to fit?
I actually don't know what a key barrel is, I assumed it is where the lock mechanism sits in so it's probably a Lotus specific item.
Hope you solve it soon,
L.G.

I have just heard from the gentleman who recently had the problem and, he now has the answer too.
"Just a quick thank you for trying to help me with a problem after locking my keys in the boot of my S2 in Spain! We had to drill the lock in the end, El Bandito charged me 130 euro for that honour!
I have replaced the barrel of the lock using the exact match and key number from Vauxhall. The barrel is from a Viva, Mark 2 Astra or VX220 fuel cap. Cost £30.
Please post on the forum, hope it helps."

I recently did something a bit daft and wouldnt wish the same thing to happen to any of you lot!
I noticed there was a little bit of movement in the lock barrel on the boot lid when I turned the key. This prompted me to investigate if any improvement could be made to tighten up aformentioned movement. Sure enough, on inspection, and disassembly I found that a little bending of the spring clip would increase its tension on the lock barrel, therefore holding it more securely. Pleased with myself I closed the boot to check my handywork. It was then I realised it is possible to replace the barrel upside down resulting in the actuating lever not engaging the boot catch!
After a cup of tea and some deliberation I did manage to resolve the situation (with no damage!) and am interested to see if my method was the same as the one relating to this thread! Would someone PM me this please? Jeff

Another preventative solution. Take one of the small magnetic key boxes, put a door/boot key in it, and locate it on the car. Now, the best place I've found is under the trunk. If you go underneath the trunk, there is a steel center support that has a coffee can-size cut out on the bottom. You can see or feel this by reaching under the car from the back. Reach your hand in this hole and place the magnetic key box inside this structural member. It works.
As I didn't get a reply for my locked-key-in trunk request from many months ago, this is my contribution to prevention -- I hope all can benefit.

I'm not sure it'll work now you've published it on the internet !!
I wouldn't leave anything in your boot from now on if I was you !!
Your car might just disappear as well

Note that I asked for help (twice) in this forum about locking keys in the boot. Since I didn't receive the courtesy of a reply, I figured a solution out on my own. Others can find another place on the car to hide a magnetic key. The original secret still remains for those chosen to receive it. Also, I just sold the car.
Frustrating to be in the outer circle....

I missed your previous request/s, so I'm sorry about that. I was just responding to Jeff who I happen to know personally (in fact he visited me just last week so that I could help him sort out a problem).
If you would like me to send you the solution please send me an email using the link in my profile and and I'll forward it onto you.

Sorry John, but I did post a couple of times for people such as you to provide an e-mail address so I could forward it. As you've sold the car, I guess you no longer need it, but if you do, I will send it post haste.

Oops - I missed the "sold the car" bit - perhaps he wants it back!
Or just to hide in the boot.
