Member locations

Can the way member's list their location in the memberlist be changed to make searching by location reasonable? Currently, you put whatever you want to. Searching by location is pretty much useless.

We don't need it to get down to street addresses or anything like that. People deserve the security of not being too specific, but country, state or territory, city (maybe) should be uniform. Some say UK or USA, others don't. There should at least be drop-down selections for country and state/territory. It's cute to put something like "a little south of sanity," but hardly useful.

Yep - this would make the members map a lot more reliable too !

There's no way to force the format of the location entry in the profile, but my plan was to introduce a new, possibly non-public, field in the profile once we upgrade the forum software to the next release (it supports custom fields apparently), then we could, er, encourage everybody to fill that in with whatever format we discover to be the most effective…
