Hmm, what is the best course of action to suggest first: do the paperclip test or PM Pinky and Watkins?

Point is Jon - you're lucky. You're in a prime spot inhabited by some pretty reasonable grease monkeys.

Hi Jon,

Not sure that i know as much as many on here (and certainly not when it comes to diagnoses), but i have a couple of things in my favour:-

1. I have elanscan
2. I have a complete set of spare engine sensors (but no ecu) to try and eliminate problems.

Where abouts are you?

I'm at Milton, Paul is out at Wick-st-L, and Iain is at Worle.

I am in the middle of an engine transplant, and work some funny shifts, but if you think I can help, drop me a line.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Fantastic...! its good to know there's others in the area.....
I am only at Sand Bay, so it seems a few of us live very close indeed.

I would be very grateful to plug into your ElanScan - its gotta be the starting point, and I still cant work out what this paperclip test is....

When would be a good time to catch up with you and 'plug in'......

cheers, Jon.

Paperclip test: http://www.lotuselancentral.com/repair/aldl.htm

I think there's something on the Wiki too, and possibly even a YouTube video.

Correct! Be brave, type ALDL in the Wiki and see what happens: It's not a bit like the main site search facility! :D

hi

sorry to hear you're having the problem. I would do the paper clip test first (it's very simple) and see if you get an error code. If like me you didn't even get the 1-2 flashing light to let you know it has entered diagonstic mode then I would suspect it's the ECU.

If it turns out to be the ECU the good news is that they are relatively inexpensive from SW Lotus (compared to the retail price of £499!) and quite easy to replace. It's plug and pray.

Best of luck. :-)

Ah ha...... Fault code 15 !

That makes sense. I really appreciate the heads up from you all with the paper clip trick, I hadn't heard of that before - never had any reason till now.

Anyway, so best I start with a new CTS and go from there.

Dapinky, would still be good to catch up with you, let me know when's good for you (and Paul & Iain ???). Im going to get a ADSL interface from Geoff tomorrow so a quick look at Elanscan in use would be most useful.

cheers, Jon.

I scratched my head, thought about it, and couldn't see anything obvious. When the RAC pitched up we tried it again and it started without hesitation, although a very strong smell of petrol - quite obviously running very rich. With it idling again and jabbing the throttle quickly it was puffing black smoke and the light came on again very quickly.

Sorry Jon, just got around to reading this. It's classic CTS failure - I was doing a write up but some @#$!ard moved it.

It's worth checking the leads and connection to the CTS because it's failed open circuit, fooling the ECU into thinking the temperature is -40°C hence the high idle speed, smell of fuel, black smoke and cutout when the engine temperature increased.

Jon,

I'm on evening shift Fri & Sat, so will be at home in daytime (Sat a.m. = kids football  )

I have a CTS sitting on the table next to me as I type. Whilst i don't want to actually part with it, I'm more than happy to loan it out to see if it cures your problem, and if it does, then you can hang onto it until you get sorted.

Wahey...... got Elanscan up and running (thanks Geoff!) and confirmed that the CTS is recording a coolant temp of -39.3 deg.... and a bank of CTS error flags.

So just waiting for the new sensor now then...... :-)

Has to be said, what a piece of software!!! - spent ages fiddling around with it last night and its got to be a must have for any M100 owner.....

I did have some frustrations getting the driver configured, but followed the lessons learnt form ano0ther thread on the Elanscan forum, and hey presto.....

Thanks for all your help. Will email the Worle guys separately.

cheers, Jon.
