the engine fault light comes on approx a minute after its been running at idle speed , also the boost gauge is reading .5 at tick over , once the ign is turned of the needle returns and the engine fault light resets , thanks for the response , will advise on progress over the weekend , thanks simonSy V wrote:simon foley wrote:after my Elan being of the road for 2 years due to lack of funds , ive just taken 2 weeks of to mot her , ive drained the fuel system, new fuel filter, new plugs and a set of leads , after taking it for a mot , it failed on the emission levels co2 reading 4.45 , also on reving up once its hitting the 3500 to 4000 rpm the power drops of , tick over is fine , its a 1991 model , thats coverd 107000 miles , any pointers , thanks chaps
Simon welcome.
And well done on getting your car back on the road.
First thing is to check the base timing as per the instructions here: Timing
Once this is set up either retest the emissions or adjust the emissions via the CO pot:
There's a write up somewhere?
As for the revs dropping off are you talking about when accelerating under boost? Does the Engine Warning Light come on?
If so it's probably a sticking wastegate which would be likely if the car's beeen sat sitting for a while.

afternoon chaps , after doing the paper clip test it was giving me code 15 , coolant temp sensor , ive removed the sensor , watched the resistance vary in a tub of boiling water , does any one no what value this should be when the coolant is up to temp then i can temporary connect a resistor across and simulate this . thanks simonSy V wrote:The boost gauge is a common problem.
Try wiggling/tightening the earth wire that comes out of the transducer (orange rubber covered cylinder on top of driver's side wheel arch in engine bay).
Please post any fault codes you get from the paperclip test...
i will be back to the grind tomoz , can i just say thanks to every ones response , fingers crossed im making progress ,Candles wrote:
after connecting a 200 ohm resistor across the connector the engine management light remained of , time to locate a new sensor as quickly as possible then i can get it back in for the retest , does any one know who has them on the shelf .thanks simon
