MSD coils, any problems with Elan M100?

Hi,

For those people who have installed MSD coils on Elan M100s, did you experience any trouble at all?

I bought 2 MSD coils, but my local auto shop advises me not to install them, saying that the rest of the car might not keep up with MSD coils.

Please advise.

I can't understand why they'd say that.
A stronger spark should produce a more efficient burn.
If it gets TOO efficient then the knock sensor should retard the ignition.

By the way, where did you get them from, how much were they and could you find out if they do mail order please?

there is no problem at all running the MSD coils on your car.

I have had mine on for a year and it runs like a dream.

I had them shipped over from Summit racing in the gud ol' USA.

Even with quite high shipping rates they were still cheaper than I could get here.

I installed two MSD coils in place of the (early-failing) Accels on Smaug when I bought him. They've been fine. I don't understand your local parts person's concern. I was able to walk into AJUSA, a local parts house, and buy them off the shelf. They have a web site also.

Do you all use the regular spark plugs, like BKR6E with MSD?


I was advised not to use MSD coils with iridium tip BKR6EIX spark plugs, saying that the iridium tip might got melt.

Please advise.

I use Iridium tipped NGKs. I have seen no evidence of melting. Be advised, though: NGKs should probably be regapped if running higher-than-stock boost. The 1.2mm gap is too wide; I sometimes get a stumble at full boost. I'd think the .6mm version would be too narrow. Stock .8 seems to be just right.

Would there be any issues using the MSD coils with the OEM ignition wires? Just curious if I need to be concerned about melting the wires

no issues at all. With anything. I've had them in my car for alittle over a year with no repercussions.

Thanks Marie, kinda what I thought. Just curious but did you notice any performance gains after switching from the OEM coils? I'm wondering if going to the MSD coils is best timed when the need to replace the OEM ones come up (and this is better than the OEM) or does it make sense to simply swap them out now for a performance boost of some sort. Thanks!
