As Ailwyn says, no code is more likely to be something the ECU knows nowt about, like the HT side. If you can get an ElanScan run done, it may help the diagnosis. What do you mean, you haven't got one? Shame on you!

If you get the engine check light you will have an error code

If it`s a sticky wastegate then you will get overboost which would result in an error code

If your being light footed with the gas then you won`t be giving full throttle to even hit overboost, so i`m just wondering is this a CAS problem

The symptoms are so violent that I'm not surprised that the engine warning light comes on.

I'm £***ing astonished not to get a proper error code, however.

I'm not clear how the CAS would cause this effect - because I'm a novice and because cam angle sensors are new to me.

Looking back through the fora, I see that Lotuska reported a similar set of symptoms, but got codes 41, 42 and 54

Wouldn’t the CAS throw up a 41? (And the HAS something else?)

So are we down to plugs, HT leads, coil packs? And is it right that these would not throw up a code?

Sy V suggested checking the integrity and insulation of the earth lead attached to one of the three coil mounting bolts, which I'll try to do in the morning.

Notwithstanding logic, and if it's not a stuck wastegate actuator, then experience suggests that replacing the HES part of the CAS (£20) - regardless of error code(s) is a good bet.

I'd agree with Sy

Check wastegate first (cheapest fix as will cost nothing as a DIY job)
Replace the HES for the sake of £20
Check earth and replace coil packs if it's not an earth problem (£34+vat each from American Autos, see my posting in parts cross-referance)

It might also be the plug leads but I've usually found the coil packs are a more regular problem and your syptoms dont sound like plug leads.

I've had quite a few coil packs fail in recent years (no doubt an age thing) and they don't usually generate an error code/light to come on, hence my thinking it's the wastegate. It could however be a combination of both!

I checked the wastegate. Fine.

I checked the leads. Fine.

After long trips away to Berlin, and the USA, new plugs have cured the problem. I'll replace the HT leads and coil packs as and when anyway, and I'll aim for a new HES/CAS too.

I'll tell him (there's loads more I need to tell him) when I'm sure that the fix is permanent. I haven't pushed the car myself yet.

The doors and windows turned out to be a nightmare because he (or a previous owner) had removed particular items, so that "not knowing what was wrong" was a tad disingenuous!

The car went in to Steve Williams in Maidenhead, who changed the plugs, reset the base timing, and immediately afterwards it pulled like a train, the turbo was fine, but now, a few days later and there is no bleeding boost at all now, to speak of. On hard acceleration, the gauge briefly goes to quarter then the needle drops back to zero, and you don't feel the rush of acceleration that the Turbo normally delivers. On the M40 I got the needle up to closer to half, but with the same "I quit" after three or four elephants.....

No engine warning light, so no point paper-clipping, yes?

Leads? Anyone recommend particular leads, and a source with leads in stock?

Or could this be the thermostat? I know that the engine management system limits the boost to .4 bar until the water temp is at "normal" operating temperature. Is there an easy way to eliminate/check this? The T° gauge goes high in a jam, but in normal driving hardly shifts off the bottom.
