Yeah! it's just that the 1/10th you are on about, is the last tenth that no sensible road user will ever see? Or did you not understand my post?? Look why is there always some "know all" who has to say their piece on something they know nothing about? Unless that is you test tyres for a living?

I am merely concerned for your safety Dave, both in your job and of course on the road. Safe driving...

I NEVER SAID A WORD ! :banghead: .................

But now you mention it.........

1) I DO use that last 10% sometimes
2) Phil DOES know what he's on about (So do lots of other people on here)
3) I HAVE done lots of testing of all safety related vehicle components (including tyres).

Sorry, I couldn't find a 'crawling under a rock with a beaten expression on my face' icon, so this will have to do.

Dave,
when you've been here for a bit longer than 5 minutes you will realise that i am a self-opinionated pi$$ taker with something to say on lots of things - but (perhaps) an expert on some stuff.

Likewise, i wouldn't wish to suggest that you either know or don't know your stuff (on any subject) and certainly wouldn't wish to say you aint got a clue on something, when you might have a bit of knowledge, or be a leading expert.

The personal snipe (as I read it to be  ) on Phil was a bit out of order when you clearly disagree with him (fair enough) but then openly state that he is wrong without knowing the facts.

Phil has a far greater knowledge of 'Material Science' than me and i will defer to his knowledge on the subject - likewise there are others on here who i can only admire with awe at their skills and abilities (many of which are kept hidden until needed or called upon).

Conversely, there are people on here (LIKE ME) who are only too happy to stick their head above the parapet for no personal gain - i like to stand up for the oppressed (or should that be 'depressed'?).

I feel that your comments were 'out of order', and as they were published on an open forum, decided that i could make a reply on the same open stage.

You (obviously) excersized your right to reply (thats what you get for living in a democracy), and invited me to return from whence i came.

However, the benefit of a Democratic environment means that i can return to the spotlight with my response, and this diatribe is it!!!

It would have been so much quicker to use 2 words (which the auto edit function would change) and an appropriate emoticon, but maybe that would achieve nothing, and this might do :?

Well, allow me to retort! I bow to the fact you have been on here for so long. Now, what the *%% difference does that make If I may be so bold as to enquire? Fact is, you stuck you're oar in where it wasn't wanted! My original statement was that no one drives within the last tenth of the abillities of an elan on public roads, therefore tyre choice (ultra budget accepted) matters very little in day to day running. Let me give you a little free advice, if you think I'm intimitated by how long you've been on here then you are sadly disillusioned! I have debated long and hard with far better people than you would ever imagine. Also, don't even begin to think you will have the last word!! I'm a legend in having the last word.

You asked a question on a public forum. How can you complain that people are 'sticking their oar in' ?

The point i was making is that you are new on here, NOT that I am old, and as such, with a bit more effort, you may soon realise who are the people to listen to, and who aint (I'M PERHAPS IN THE LATTER GROUP, AS FAR AS YOU ARE CONCERNED!).

Just for the record, you never mentioned the words 'Elan' 'last 10%' and 'public roads' in the same sentence..........

....if you had, you'd be correct, but for what you wrote, you aint!

There is a difference between what you mean, what you say, what i hear and what i understand

I thank you for your 'Free Advice' and I'm glad i haven't intimidated you, hence i am not sadly dissilusioned :-D

Who you have debated with in the past is of no concern of mine, it is the latest discussion which people remember (Quote from Freud).

And as to whether they are better than me, well, that's a purely inconsequential arguement.

And as for the last word, well, if it's that important to you, you may have it by simply replying to these comments however you see fit, and I will leave it at that for you to cellebrate with your jelly and ice-cream!

Are you reading the same thread as me?
wasn't the original poster asking what tyres would be suitable for an elan, if he couldn't afford michelins?
Didn't I as an elan owner, on an elan website, talking about elan tyres, say that IMHO..bla, bla, bla? What freaking car did you think we talking about. Me thinks you may have the memory of a golden type fish pal!!! Or perhaps you've got yourself in a tizz over this??

If I may stick my oar in where it may not be wanted...

While I agree that no sensible driver is going to see that last 1/10th during normal road use, the most critical time on the road is going to be when something goes wrong. When some other driver does something that requires you to use that last 1/10th to avoid disaster.

You can drive around on completely bald tires without incident, as long as the road stays dry, and nothing unexpected ever happens, but I wouldn't recommend it. The first time anything unexpected does happen, you'd be in trouble.

So, Phil is right. Understand that you don't have to be tracking the car or driving like you are to perhaps need every bit of maneuvering/stopping ability you can get.

I couldn't agree more my southern friend. But that's not what the debate is about!! The debate is whether a half decent set of tyres...(tyres.not tires!!) are as good as the premium brands. I said that as long as you were not driving at 10 10ths then the difference is negligable. Give my regards to the old Miss will you....

I understand. My point is that you don't have to be intending to use all 10 10ths for it to become necessary. As for comparison of premium vs other tyres ( 8) ), I've had two blowouts over the years. Both were front tires. Both were relatively new tires. Both were caused by debris in the road, not failure of the tire. One was a Michelin, which was the factory tire on a Hond Pilot. The other was a General that I had bought as part of a full set of replacements on an Isuzu Rodeo. When the General blew out, it was very scary. The vehicle became almost uncontollable immediately, and couldn't be driven at all until changed. When the Michelin went, it was much more controllable, and the sidewall was able to support the vehicle long enough to safely leave the highway (a stretch with no shoulder to pull off onto).

When things go wrong, the premium tire can definitely make a noticable difference.

Hmm!! Hardly a good comparison is it, how good a tyre handles in a blowout situation? Plus European "TYRES" are far superior to your average U.S. crap...No disrespect just a fact of life

Oh! the big bad moderator steps in!! Why can't you see the debate? Why am I not being civil? Couple of your mates are they? Can't speak for themselves? Look if they can't stand the criticism they shouldn't reply to the post. One of them been on the phone to you? "Please sir the big bad newbie won't listen to my point of view" No the big bad newbie won't listen to an "invalid point of view". Also if the big bad newbie has broken any forum rules then please point them out. If he hasn't then can Non debators including moderators keep off the thread!!

You say "no direspect," but most of your posts all full of it. Sorry, but how they handled in a blowout situation is a very good comparison, and an important quality of any tire, unless you don't value your life, or your family's. As for European tyres being far superior, WTF?

People on this forum often disagree, but never post with the tone of your posts. I don't know anybody here personally, but virtually I haven't met any so far I don't like, until now.

BTW, I don't think anything about being a fireman makes you uniquely qualified to know bullsh1t when you hear it.

No! No! Thanks for your kind offer but I like it on here :-D In fact I've had quite a bit of help off people on here. Just don't think because you have 1000+ posts it gives you carte blanche to say what you want without someone having a totally opposite and just as valid viewpoint.
