A warning about the weatherstrip replacements...

Postby Foo » Sun 29.06.2008, 22:50

They didn't work for me. Not wide enough to clear the distance from the edge of the door panel to the glass.

Washers did no good and there wasn't enough adjustment in the window sliders to move the glass closer to the strip (and that for as far as I did take it, the glass no longer reached the hood seal anymore).

All in all, a waste of 2 days and my door is worse than when I started. Absolutely gutted.

No idea if it's because I've got a very early model SE, or if the door has just warped out so far as an anomoly. Either way, no chance the cheaper replacements are going to do it for me. Think I'll run the car in to Chris Foulds and see if they'll completely re-do the doors.

Ok, so where did you get the weather strips from?

Were these recommended to you from here or from someone on the Forum?
I only ask because I don't recognise those pages.

It was posted here but I can't find the original post. It's the same part as listed/pictured in the PDF

Foo

I hope you don't think I'm pouring salt on your wounds - I'm trying to prevent others following this path until we can ascertain if there is a problem, that's all.
What PDF?

Sorry about being curt, just generally a bit miffed and stewing on what I'm going to do next. I was referring to the PDF writeup on replacing the strips that Gordon wrote.

OK, found it.

I've e-mailed Gordon to ask him to take a look and check that there's no typo in his article.
That's all I can do for now.

Oh hell, I've just thought of something... Foo, can you confirm that you have both sets of guides fitted to your door set-up?

Both present, although don't seem to be actively pressing against the glass to hold it in a particular position. Their purpose appears to be preventing the glass scraping on any hard surface if it jolts in the door...

At the moment I'm considering adding some washers to all 3 slider rails, to see if I can move the entire glass out a short distance. I think it'll mess up the door seals though.

The only other idea I have is to extend the weatherstrip somehow.

Hmm, what a dilemma.

I've just done mine but I put OEM parts back on.
I have a spare passenger side one (I think) if it'll help.

Thanks Sy, I might take you up on that and make you an offer later.

I could do with shifting my glass a little inwards if anything which would move it further from the seal... beginning to wonder if there's a general problem with the shape of my doors.

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with this project;

The 685 profile linked to earlier in this thread is the profile that I used (and from the same supplier for that matter)

Agreed, it's not as big as the OEM part, but I found it satisfactory for the job - I did pass comment in the document that the pressure is lightest at the front end, and the two or three tabs nearest the door mirror may benifit from 1 or 2 mm packing with either washers or double tabs, but on my card that was not needed.

I made no adjustments to the position of the glass, nor would I recommend any, as that will inevitably result in problems lining up with the A-Post and the hood.

The support blocks are there to stop the window rattling around when in the lowered position, and have little bearing when window is up. The upstop-bobins and brackets are most important however - are they both present and correctly adjusted?

the 685 profile I was supplied with had a 'flap' that was 10mm long - unless the spec of the profile has been changed, I can't see how a problem would arise that would result in a gap that big?

Foo, can you possibly post some pictures to clarify where the problems lay?

Thanks for the reply Gordon.

I'll try and take some pics tonight but until I strip the door again I probably can't demonstrate it. Since this is my daily driver I had to slap it all back together again late Sunday.

I wonder if there's another supplier that can source larger weatherstrips... that'd be the simplest solution to my problem (that didn't involve gifting a lotus dealer with £140 for 2 bits of flocked rubber)

Gordon's write up is linked into the Wiki. If you come up with any alternatives Foo, could you update the Wiki entry please? :D

I had a similar problem when I did my weatherstrips, this was before I knew about LEC so I sourced the strip from a different place and LEC had nothing to do with my problems.

I know just how jarred off you are, I ended up spacing out the holder I had manufactured, however this meant that the other edge didn't then contact the door skin, in other words the rubber was tight on the glass but then there was a gap between the top of the door skin and the start of the rubber.

The solution was to use masking tape along the door skin and apply black silicone sealent in the gap.

 A word of warning however.....DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE LONGER SCREWS  , I managed to put 5 holes in the door skin before I noticed - moral of the story......

There is always someone worse off than you...and BRG IS a very very unforgiving colour!

I also used the #685 from http://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk/ I didnt experience this issue while changing the seal all I had to do was to add 2 washers to the end by the door mirror. Seems something isnt adjusted right

Sorry to hear of your problems Foo, I have used the very same profile as yourself,(in kit form from Gordon) it is possible, but can be quiet a stressful job , once you start altering the guide rails it can very quickly go tits up :shock:I had to walk away once or twice
But I managed to get it back to where I needed it to be.
I did have a problem with the glueing of the tabs ,until I discovered Q bond, fantastic stuff.
Good luck Foo

Hi
Long time since I mailed the Forum, but has anybody tried this seal
http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1259-wi ... strip.aspx

The dimensions given to me over the phone are :
Leg of T 17 mm
Cross bar of T 12 mm and 5 mm
and is is filled with "stiff plastic"

Or is this identical to 685 ?

Cheers
