now what do i do? its not CTS,MAP sensor, no Fault code

Postby rushing » Mon 23.06.2008, 14:52

Hello all again

Symptoms

Engine starts fine runs for while and then there is a lot of misfire like its going to cut out, but it doesnt. the engine idle is very erratic like idling with one or two misfires. misfires have become worse.you could actually hear a mis or two from the exhaust . its like its going to cut out but doesnt. have to again keeps revs up high on stationary start. also if i drive slow and mear enough come to a holt near traffic lights for example it sound very misfirey and the engine struggle sto keep alive .car still starts and runs when revs kept up high .

So far im not having much luck at all with my elan . i have posted here on a previous threads about my MAP sensor. got hold of a map sensor from Rock auto. ordered the first one by mistake and than had to order anothert one from rock auto due incoorect one sent. put the correct one in - still running with the above symptoms still running the same.

Changed the CTS still the same .

did a paper clip test no fault codes showing

changed spark plugs - all four still the same no luck

can some one please help me out with this problem im really struggling .
there must be something . what do i do next :( ,

please advise

To save me looking back... Have you tried running the engine with the engine management system disabled.

With the engine running...put the paper clip in. If it shows the same signs, its something ordinary, like plugs, coil, leads or fuel.

Try disconnecting the battery for a while, if the engine runs normal with the ECU turned off.

Hope this helps,

Ray

Sounds like a coil pack on it's way out to me, but I haven't got time to look through all the other threads to see if you've tried that already.

Ray, I've never even heard of it being possible for the car to run without the ECU connected. Does it recommend that somewhere in the service manual? :?

Sorry Neil,

It’s probably my choice of words, and trying to avoid using abbreviations.
I was referring to the engine being in service mode.

Applying the paper clip after the engine has been started.

Ray

Edit: Neil,

I can see from the manual it’s referred to as CO Adjustment mode. While sorting my ‘tickover in neutral’ problem I somehow understood it was running as a bare engine, with most of the sensors disabled...perhaps it’s not the case?

Hi

Postby rushing » Mon 23.06.2008, 15:34

You mean turn the engine on and put the paper clip on. hmm im a bit worried some thing might happen.

when i initially did the paper clip test it just kep flasing code 12 thre times and the gain code 12 all the way.

i have taken the ADL connector off and turned the engine on ( his is without any paper clip inserted ) the car turn on thats it .

im wondering if its the Hall sensor?? then im only guessing here . cant do much with no fault code reading or showing up

why is there no fault code showing up

It’s quite safe to put the clip in while the engine is running.

The socket the ALDL is plugged into is only blank socket; it could just as well be a matchbox. There are no connections to it.

Start a thread in "Major Projects" and post all your problems on there to save the other 2438 of us jumping all over the site to understand your car's history

You'll get more/better response that way.

if its in the coil pack style of cutting/missing/high reving. you could try the MAP wires under the windscreen wiper arm in the engine bay....

mine were quite powdery.
i wiggled them first and the car died.
this was due to the build up of powder/corrosion.

but of clean out with wd40/contact spray and all was well.

just an easy fix idea..

that's if it is this of course...

good luck..

Go to this page, type "MSD" in the first box, press the imaginatively titled button at the bottom of the page, and see what happens!

HMMM

Postby rushing » Tue 24.06.2008, 19:10

No topics match your criteria . but i found what i need from lookieng around th treads.

Is the MSD coil pack easy to replace . im not sure its the hall sensor now as the paperclip test shows no fault codes . so could be the coil pack.do you remove the anti freeze bottle and the big pipe to get to this . i replaced the map sensor myself with help of a friend but im wondering if changing the coil pack is easy a this . Might PM RIP to come down and give me a hand ..

today the car ran ok'ish still sluggish with misfires. a lot of black sooty smoke , carbon inside the exhaust as well buti had this before the problem.

I don't know how no topics matched your search criteria - I got 30 matches, and in the 4th one down on the list you would see this.

No need. I'm lurking.
 Never replaced a coil pack...but yes, you can get to them by removing the wing-plenum pipe and releasing the expansion tank.
I still think it would be worth getting some data from Elanscan first. I'll be careful not to drop my other laptop & kill it like the last one :banghead:

Sounds to me as though it might be the ECU on the way out if you're not getting error codes : look at this thread www.lotuselancentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12777

Also if you end up getting new coils (as I have recently done) I think there is a group buy going on for MSD coils. They're easy to fit-- even I managed it :-)

That group buy has finished (the parts have all shipped).
But the instructions are all there to start another one, and judging by how quickly we reached 10 last time, I'm sure that anyone could drum up support from another 4 to join them in a 2nd round.
