the part under the steering wheel

Postby ratman » Tue 12.08.2008, 17:09

hallo everybody,
I'm searcing the part that is under the steering wheel and is used to cover the electrical system. I think that in the FED cars it is bigger and softer as a cuscion. I really can't find it in the fascia's Page in the parts book.
I need the little screw caps like the A100V0628H fascia's ones.
I don't know if they are the same or not!
ciao, F.

I can think of two differnt parts that you may be describing. One is the column shroud. This is a two piece (top and bottom) plastic part that wraps around the steering column just behind the steering wheel (on a Fed car anyway). Has the ignition receptacle and turn signals sticking out of it.

The other is a large, balck vinyl wrapped part called the knee bolster. Its supposed to stop "submarining" (among other things) in the event the air bag goes off in a rapid deceleration where the body has a tendency to slide down under the steering wheel.

Which one are you after?

I’m absolutely speaking about of the knee bolster. In the Fed one is bigger than the European one. I need the European one and the bolt’s finishing caps

Not sure if they are bigger or not. If the European model didn't come with an airbag steering wheel then there's an excellent chance they are very different. If it did, they may be the same or similar. However, since there are no bolt finishing caps on the Fed model (just a couple of regular bolts and two hooks hold it on) then I'm guessing they are different.

I don't think i can help you out here - I have a copy of the LHD (european) parts book, and i can't find any reference to the parts you are refering to :?

Without knowing the exact bit you mean, (as we don't have the part on the UK model), i had nothing to go on, so looked at every page, without anything similar coming up - sorry :(

It is certainly not in either the Interior Trim or the Steering sections of the book.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
