S2 observations...

Been looking at a '94 S2...

Nice car but the central air vents (interior) are not producing any air and appear blocked perhaps. Any ideas?

Also the car seems to run at a very low temperature. A warm engine was only producing a quarter notch on the temp' gauge. Is this normal or anything to worry about.
The engine was buzzy but seemed 14 year old ELAN buzzy...

Brakes needed a fairly good push to operate (compared to modern cars), but nothing out of the ordinary I guess?

And the hood had a small gap towards the front of the drivers side window that would let in air and water. Is this easy to correct? Likewise the rear quarter area of the hood (where it sits on the rear quarter panel) had gaps where you could look up into the interior if you lay on the floor. Is this normal ELAN hood fit. It didn't seem wrong or damaged just not quite sealed as you would expect from any other car. I'm guessing this is fine too?

Steering is very hissy at low/ parking speeds. But seemed ELAN-ish...

Paintwork is great but a respray would be better. Any ideas on price?

The original brakes were actually quite good, but the pedal would have felt like it had a lot of travel, then a hard stop at the end, when new. After 14 years, calipers, etc, will have worn and if you don't have the $$$ for the upgrades, you'll be perfectly happy with a good refurb all around, and SS lines will also help. Big brake upgrades are a must if you do anything to increase performance (if you go faster, you have to increase stopping ability to match), which most of those with the upgrades have done as well.

As was already pointed out, 1/4 on the temp is normal, and if 3/4 makes you uncomfortable, you can get a lower temp fan switch to make the fans come on sooner.

I've just fitted a lower temp fan switch, comes on half way between 1/4 and 1/2

If the vents aren't working it could be the vacuum pipe that's come adrift at the back of the plenum (common).
Do you get a vacuum hiss when changing between screen, vents and footwell?

It's the low temp fan switch from Rodney Dickmans 195/185degree F (90/85degC).

Moving the fan selector dials did seem to produce a vacuum effect and a stiffness in the dial when approaching the central fan position. The side vents work, so... Your theory is more than likely right.
