Fans needed URGENTLY

I'm looking for radiator fans, in a real rush. SJ only have one in stock, and can't order any more before Tuesday.

Any ideas, anyone?

Or is there a good upgrade option while I'm at it?

What's your problem...

I have access to a couple of OEM ropey ones... but they work...

or worse case I have some new OEM ones, but they are waiting to go on the project car....

I'd be willing to come up with a plan...

Mine don't work at all. Steve Williams has diagnosed that it is the fans, having checked the relays and everything else.

The lack of fans hasn't been an absolute game-stopper so far - the Elan's not our only car, so if I need to go (say) to London in rush hour I can use the Peugeot or the Rover, or I can resign myself to simply stopping to cool down if the car starts over-heating. It's been a limiting factor now and again (I went to Silverstone in a mate's Esprit, and missed the Benson track day, but no major disappointments!)

My wife's a schoolteacher, and has had a hellish year and a work- and ageing parent-packed holiday so far. Next year will be even worse with inspections and the like. We'd really hoped to get away for a mini break before term starts and I'm getting the new clutch I need (and that SW Lotus have in hand) fitted next week (Wednesday PM or Thursday AM). SW knew they were supposed to be doing fans as well, but failed to order any. Lotus don't have them, nor does anywhere else. SJ Sportscars may have one......

But after years of MGs (my wife's having boiled or nearly boiled on a number of occasions), going away in a car whose needles creep rapidly upwards if you sit in traffic for any time will not be a relaxing break, and so I really need to get the car running properly.

I'd welcome the opportunity to chat it over with you Specky, and would really value your advice. If you have OEM fans then (and it really pains me to say this) you should not consider selling them to me unless SJ can guarantee future supplies.....

If the worst comes to the worst Jon, I'd go for Candles' solution on the Wiki and stick some Demon Tweek fans in rather than drive around without. There is quite a lot of evidence pointing towards a correlation between overheating and head gasket failure.

I know Geoff. I'm absolutely petrified of that and keep one eye glued to the T° at all times. But honestly, since the one occasion when I learned that they didn't cut in at all, I just stop and turn everything off way, way before the needle gets to one third of the way up the dial.

It's seriously marring my enjoyment of the car.

One problem is that the non functioning fans are so corroded that changing them over is a job that's beyond my confidence, if not my competence and equipment!

IIRC SJ fans are not OEM...

The valeo motors are in use on loads of different assemblies...

If the shroud is adverage condition , de-rivet the motor, remove the circlip on the fan and put in a new one in...

I think the shrouds are in what you might call sub-par condition, and de-riveting motors is beyond my abilities. I'm more a 'fit direct replacement if access is easy and if comprehensive instructions are available' kind of chap. I thought I was doing well in stripping and mending a glovebox lock!!!

So please do come up with your plan?

These are a bit better fans than the stock ones. Cheaper too I'll bet. Quiter, cool better and use less amps.
