Limp-home mode

Postby rip » Mon 25.08.2008, 15:56

I believe my Elan has got stuck in limp-home mode.

Firstly I think my stat is stuck because, while driving yesterday. I put the heater on full & kept an eye on my temp gauge, which always read hotter than normal but rarely got hotter than halfway (unless I was sitting in traffic, which is when I first became suspicious).

While passing somebody yesterday at about 0.8 bar boost the car hesitated & the CEL came on. I was about 10 miles from home so I drove gently for the rest of the way.
After arriving back, I did the paperclip test but the ECU completely ignored it: when turning the ignition on, the CEL came on & stayed on.
Today, I tried running Elanscan but got no data at all.
It idles at about 1400 rpm (which it never did before).
Once warm, I took it for a short drive and put my foot down. It hit .65 bar boost, even with the switcher set to Kilimanjaro. I don't know how high I was revving so don't know if I exceeded 4000rpm. I took the switcher board out, but this made no difference.

How do I reset the ECU to take it out of Limp-home? I have looked through the manuals, but cannot find anything so far.
I also thought I would find more about it on here, but so far have been unable to.

I've already had the ECU out twice (to remove & refit the switcher) with no effect.
I'll try disconnecting the battery though - nothing to lose, everything to gain.

If not, then what?

Here are the complete symptoms:
CEL light stays illuminated whenever the ignition is turned on.
Paperclip is ignored, whether or not the ignition is already switched on.
ECU will not talk to Elanscan.
.65 bar boost with Kilimanjaro chip.
1400 rpm idle speed.
Not sure about max revs because I would have changed up before 4000rpm anyway.
CEL intiaially came on when I was overtaking somebody at 0.8 bar boost. Car hesitated & CEL came on & stayed on.
This was while the car was running a little too warm (needle just under half) & I had been for about 15-20 minutes with the heater fans on full to try and dissipate the heat.
When I got home, the ECU was hot to touch, but not too hot to handle.

Rip,

Did you try running the car without the mountain chip? i.e. back to stock?

If you fit the paperclip while the engine is running, do you notice a change in tone associated with the car going into service mode? If not I would suspect the ECU I'm afraid... test without the mountain chip to ascertain that it's not that which has gone.

Yes - no change.

Paperclip with engine off - no change.
Paperclip with engine running - no change.

This is sounding a bit ominous..like I'll be buying an ECU in Hethel next month instead of driving the Elan there. :(

Get someone near you to swap their ECU into your car to verify that the ECU is the problem... it would be an expensive swap only to find the problem still exists.

It would be worth checking all the connectors to the ECU as well.
