Well, I've now taken the plunge a V5 Switcher on it's way as we speak

Hopefully installed and tested before we all get up to Hethel for Lotus's 60th.

Hi,

No rolling road done yet. Hmmm, thinking that the best way forwards seems to be to find a flat road and do a standing 1/4 mile a few times with ElanScan. Should be fun, and avoid £75 a time on a rolling road.

Good though Elanscan is, Alan admits that it's power calculation figures aren't all that accurate.

The V5 is an excellent upgrade, and the particularly great thing about it is that with a turn of the switch you can put the car back to standard without even taking it off the dyno, so in theory you should be able to get before and after figures without having to make 2 visits (and so hopefully just get the one charge).

It's just that whenever someone says "I want more power", the question that I have to respond with is "more than what?" More than standard? More than you've got now? How do you know what you've got now IS standard, and that everything is setup properly? You need a baseline to work from.

Bear in mind the following: Base timing was never supposed to vary from the factory setting, but we all know that over the years it does, and makes a huge difference to performance and economy because of it.
Similarly sensors (e.g. CTS, MAP) and components (plugs, coil packs, leads) break down.

Despite it's age the Elan still posts about the same figures as standard as a Honda Civic Type R. How much more power do you want with standard brakes?!?

I've got a V4 everest installed now and will install the V5 elysium and switcher shortly. I've downloaded and installed the Dynolicious applicaiotn for my iPod Touch and played around with it a bit. Seems to do all it promises!. So, I will shortly do a efw runs with the everest to check max horsepower and 0-60 times. Then I'll install the elysium and run the tests again. Should be interesting and probably a bit more accurate than ElanScan in this regard.

On an unrelated subject, anyone know what the drive train horsepower loss is for our cars? Apparently, the average is between 15 and 25%

That is a very good point. I want to make my Elan a bit faster and was thinkning of getting an Everest Chip, however I have no idea what kind of power my car is making at the moment. I've never even been in another Elan to compare.

I found a Superchips sales brochure in my service history to confuse things even more. Ailwyn did an Elanscan run on my car and it showed a higher boost rate than a standard car. I dunno what to do about it to be honest.

I think you need to find out what's in the car first befroe you consider changing anything. You may have to pull the ECU to see if a chip is in there (and if so, remove it while its out ). THEN, you can start with the Everest chip or a switcher which would be a better idea.

If it is one of the new push-button switchers, then remove it immediately. ESM has issued a recall on them.

all ready replaced my brake pads with Green stuff rears and those really expensive Blue ones on the front!

Just wondering how much willwoods will set mt back front a rear and if some one can point me in the right direction!

Took my Elan for a test run today after having the Peco fitted!

Wow Does it Growl!!!! Sounds like I got a V8 under the hood or driving a hummer lol !

Not too sure if there is a problem yet as didn't really have enough road or time to test it but to start with on normal Unleaded it back fired a lot, then after putting £20 Premium unleaded it seemed to stop and behave !

Bloody heck does it shift now too !!! Like i said I didn't get enough road to really test it but when I did a little and managed to get full boost the gauge built up to 1 Bar and I am not sure but i think there was some cut out Have I got the dreaded boost creep?

Sounds like overboost. The backfiring sounds like the timing may need tweaking. This may also reduce the overboost to a point where it is no longer a problem. I don't understand why this is, but it made a huge difference to mine.

i have a peco on mine, i also get a lot of burble and pop on standard 95, with tesco 99 it runs quite a lot smoother. but its damned expensive

If you are running more boost than standard I strongly advise running on premium fuel (seems to be anywhere between 97099 RON depending on where you get it from). I won't start yet another discussion on whether it gives more power or not but the octane number is a measure of knock resistance, the higher the number the more resistant the fuel is to knock. As knock is bad and more likely at higher boost you need to do all that you can to prevent it as the ECU will compensate for any knock detected by retarding the ignition giving the symptoms described above. It is also essential that the base timing is spot on and checked reasonably regularly.

Having My wastgate Ported to 21mm while its at the garage to cue the creep!

Will I still get upto 1 bar boost with everest after its ported?

Overboost should ave occurred at 0.95 bar.
With the chip in control of boost, you should get 0.9 bar.
You will be able to keep your foot firmly planted in the knowledge that the ECU will not suddenly cut power.
