Interior door trims

Postby Jonathan Lawson » Tue 09.09.2008, 18:35

How easy is it to source door trims and electric window motors/mechanisms to basically refurbish the doors, are there any good companies who would do the work without being extravagent ? :o

Basically, almost everything in the doors is hard to impossible to replace. The interior panels can be found at breakers, even here in the US, and the window glass is available. The window regulators are not. The motors can be rebuilt, and the sliders and rails are available new. There are write-ups in the Wiki about rebuilding/repairing the motors, and replacing the cables if needed. The motor also is the same as the Peugeot 405 rear window, I think, but the regulator isn't. You can swap the motor with some fiddly work. It's been done before. The escutcheons (the panel behind the interior door latch) aren't available, but since several members just replaced theirs with carbon-fibre ones, you may be able to find somebody here who'll give or sell you their originals if you're in need. I actually have a left side one I don't need. The door cards (the sort of oval-shaped leather-wrapped inserts) aren't available either, but unless the plastic behind it is badly broken, you can get them recovered pretty easily.

thanks for info, although it sounds like it could be a tricky job, I feel appeased by the wealth of knowledge available between Elan owners :P

The parts are (like talk) relatively 'cheap'.

But this is massively labour intensive stuff, so getting it done is mind-bogglingly expensive. MIND BOGGLING.

You then need to choose - do you get a cheaper labour rate, or go for a Lotus Elan specialist who can do the job far more quickly?

personaly ive had problems with using cheaper mechanics, taking far longer than official lotus times, so in this case id strongly recomend a specialist, ie someone who knows the elan well, rather than say dealer who sells lotus. just my 2p. :D
