I had a look as well and I can't add very much. I also observed that the flags 43 bits seem to vary more than do in other cars and the changes in state cause big changes in both timing and fuelling.
The PROM is a very early one - it must be different to the later revisions in some ways but I can't say what those might be without seeing a PROM dump of it. I imagine a 9929 based ECU would work fine but its hard to say for sure without looking at the code. Was the replacement ECU a different PROM version or was the original 9998 memcal installed in it? If it was a different PROM id then the fact a code sets might indicate that the early version didn't detect the CAS error very well and was revised as a result. The symptoms do match a CAS issue quite well.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to sit on your arse with a blank look on your face.

I did say a long time ago to change the HALL in the CAS a long time ago as it was only a 20 quid part

no i never came around to changing the CAS but changed MAP ,coils . thermo, cts, mat , --- hmm yes!! you were right MONTY i should have listened to you and tried this ohhh well worth changing the parts i guess. RiP did mention this too... my new ECU has got a lot of power-- its fantasic the old ECU did not detect any error nessages at all but i think it was playing up . i did the paper clip test yeasterday and it threw out error code 41 ---
i have bought a honeywell Hall sensor i will get this replaced . do i have to change the whole CAM or just changing the honeywell Hall sensor would do???
thanks to everyone especially RIP who has advised me and helped me out on the mechanics side . you guys have really given me sound advise... im useless when it comes to mechanics -- much appreciated...... i might have solved my long waiting problem

and what a thread

i think the the old ecu is an old version . it is definantly chiped or something done to it coz when i got the car the stickers had been replaced and had a Barton motors seal on it so a garage must have done some work to it . yes ESM i never read fault codes hence thats why it did not read the CAS fault.

Yep got the honeywell version from Hethel last weekend for £15 but it`s different to the one i fitted to Pinky 1 (many years ago

) ie there`s no instruction, no replacement connector and i`m sure the HALL had a plastic section that screwed in to the CAS
Jason, fingers crossed that solves your problems

Just change the HES (Hall Effect Sensor) as this is quite a common failure and the usual reason for the CAS error. I thought you had changed and this was why you were suspecting the CAS to coil pack wiring. I would bet a Pound to a pinch of s**t that the HES/CAS has been at the root of many of your problems as an accurate CAS timing signal is fundamental to the engine's operation.

drove my car today after i got the cam belt done and HALL sensor done . the cambelt department is ok. car is

with the new belt and water pump. i guess . as you all are aware my hall sesor has been the major problems last copule of months and the mechanic put a new sensor in . so i tested the car after the job done . went 40 miles and back . the engine light did not come on nor did the bunny hopping symptom come on which the faulty HALL does . but when i got home just for curiosity did the paperclip test and code 41 popped up again .hmmmm very strange . does the ECU memory store this old code or does the fault still exist. the new HALL sesor wiring and pins are a bit different and the mechanic said the old hall housing is different from the upgraded lotus hall sensor . even the three black , green and red wires are thicker . but he said that he replaced the pins and replaced the hall as in the manual . no symptom but why is fault code showing . im getting paranoid now if the new hall i put is slightly faulty ..
might take the battery out and re set the ecu to see if the fault paper clip code show dissapears ..

I had a few minor issues with my new one...
The two solid rivets were loose in the head... a quick bit pinch with rivet sqeezers sorted that out...
and there's no mounting point on like on the S2's pipe... (ty-wrapped to the CAS)
I paid £19 and it takes 20 mins to fit... a well worth investment...
Here's a pick of the kitTTFN

Holy Thread Resurrection!
For anyone doing a search on '9998', I've just examined a '9998' prom and here's what I found:
It looks like a standard '9929' prom with just 1 Byte difference in the code.
That byte is a Mask used in checks to see whether to raise diagnostic codes, the ones 'switched off' in comparison with a '9929' are:
Mass Air Pressure High
Cam Angle Sensor Error
Electronic Spark Timing Error
It would certainly explain why 'rushing's car didn't raise an error code when his CAS failed!
Perhaps the 9998 was a testing version which made it out into a few cars by mistake?
By the way, all the Boost parameters on this chip are the same as a standard 9929 Prom.

Good idea Joao,
I've always referred to Alan's Mountain chips website for prom details, but his site's down at the moment, although a backup of the relevant page is still available
HERE on the Wayback machine.
It would be nice to have it at a central point on LEC in case Alan doesn't return to making chips and the Wayback machine folds.
I can add some details of the things I've stumbled across over the last few years.
