RESPRAY???

Postby ektrolleyboy » Fri 26.09.2008, 19:49

A bit of market research before I take the plunge...

Who's had a respray?
Where did you go?
How was the quality?
What kind of job did you have done (engine out/seals left in etc.) ?
How long did it take?
And how much did it cost $$$ ?

Surferphil has had a beautiful respray - the end result looks luvverly - though he had to cut and finish it himself, I believe.

We went to a classic show at Wentworth Castle on Sunday and while walking among the cars we came across a blue Triumph Vittesse from Manchester and were suitably amazed at how new it looked... all the bodywork, chassis, suspension and even the petrol tank were gleaming.

It turned out the chap had had the car for 31 years. When it needed a respray he got a quote for £3500... Not being able to warrant spending that amount of money on a car that cost £350 he did it himself... with 31 cans of spray paint from Halfords...ten years ago...apparently its all in the rubbing down and polishing afterwards...rather him than me.

Sounds like a brave man... :P

I've had a quote of 1500-2000 (they haven't seen the car yet'). (Bromsgrove-OPTION 1. They're fibreglass/LOTUS/TVR specialists and close to home (UK) for me).
My car's already very clean, just not perfect so I'm hoping for the lower end of that quote.
I want perfect!
Need to get new badges/front splitter/door seals/B pillar seals. If you're going to do it you may as well go the whole hog is my theory.

When's Donington? Not my thing, but it might be nice to come and show off!
Next I'll be buying a LOTUS T-shirt and I'll be a fully fledged nerd as my friends are already starting to call me!
(Shsssh! But I've already been looking at the T-shirts... Ha, ha...)

If your paintwork is original than I'd say don't respray it. From what I've seen and learned no respray can match the original factory paint in terms of durability. It's up to you of course...

As an ex-car dealer and someone that really knows paint, I would have to dissagree!
The original LOTUS finish is pathetic!
Really poor... Hence the Laquer peel that so many suffer from. Mine included!

Excuse my enthusiasm, but you're so wrong!

Might be... It might also have something to do with the paint finishes I've seen before; could be poor workmanship. Anyway good luck with it. :)

OPTION 1 will be doing the repair to my Silk red (everything forward of the windscreen and blended into the doors).
I hope to have them pick it up on friday. I will let you know how it goes. (they do pics of the whole process and a file of the work. he also says the fibreglss will NOT split again after the repair)

Had my hardtop and new rear deck sprayed to match the rest of the car at Indygo just north of Shaftesbury (Dorset) not too far from Salisbury, Bath, South Coast etc. They seem to do a lot of Classic car work (3 Astons in when I dropped off). Very pleased with the result (but time will tell if it is durable) and all who saw the work at Hethel seemed impressed, very good colour match to the rest of the car and £500 +VAT (included a mop polish of the whole car as well). Full respray will have to wait until I retire and stop throwing it in gravel traps!
