Power Steering pipes/hoses

I`m in the middle off removing my PAS rack and need to disconnect 2 pipes

You have to start with the lower pipe 1st before you can even start on the upper pipe The lower pipe goes direct to the reservoir and the upper goes to the top of the PAS pump.

Actually the connections didn`t look to bad, gave them a clean and sprayed different types off products but the 1st pipe was solid, eventually i got it to move but the pipe is twisting the nut should move independent from the pipe

Any ideas?

I don`t know if these pipes are still available and if they are i bet there expensive for what they are (I`ll put a post in the wanted section to see if anyones got any old used ones)

Going to leave it to soak over night and try again tomorrow. Now if that doesn`t work i`m thinking off cutting the metal pipe to help with removal and when i put the pipe back i intend to rejoin with a bit off hose & some clips.
So the question is will this be ok?
or will the metal pipe just crush with the jublie clips?
or is there alot of pressure in the system and could end up popping off?

Well i had no joy with those dam pipes and had to cut them so i now need to replace them

I took the 2 pipes to Pirtek but when the guy looked at the connections he said that they may have trouble replicating them it was late in the day when i took them round so he`s going to ring about tomorrow to see if they can do them.
Looking from your photo on your link, the new connection on your pipe looks different to the stock flared end (had to save the pic and zoom in) have you got any other details that i can give to Pirtek that may help them? BTW looking at that pic again, did they use the old nut/connection

If you get stuck I have a second hand spare set, in the spare rack at present so depends is it comes out clean

Also you may be able to get the ends and then fit a hose with reusable ends

The part they were concerned about is the connection to the steering rack (see photo below. thanks to geoff for the photo ) now i don`t know if it`s the flared end or the actual connection part that the are concerned about (i`ll find out tomorrow)
If you compare this photo to the photo above of Geoffs new pipe you can see they`ve done away with the flared end, so i`ll print that off and take with me to there shop.

Bob, are you saying that you have the correct conection for the both pipes going to the rack? as they are different sizes IIRC ones M14 the other M16

Those fittings are common on power steering racks it is sealed by an "O" ring that fits on to the flared flange.
The hose people are correct they can be tricky to make a bit like a double flare on a brake pipe except you want it about 3 or 4mm up the pipe.
If you look at the top picture I posted the end "B" goes into the rack and the black bit is the "O" ring it then leaves you with a standard Aeroquip end to run the hose from if space is tight as I think it is you fit a right angle fitting to the end.

The same trick can be done to the other end of the hose where it fits on to the pump but this time with a suitable banjo.
It is what people do to make their engine bays loook the dogs dangly parts, stainless steel hoses to everything.

The formed end was a standard part - they chose a long one and cut some off for the banjo fitting. I don't think they had the retaining nut for the rack so they re-used the old one. Here's the list of parts they used:

It`s a pain as the new PAS rack is in, but can`t put back the suspension etc until i get the pipes sorted

Well i went armed with the photo`s and Geoffs parts list and they guy was saying they don`t have the flared end (the part were the rubber seal sits) he also thinks that the lower metal pipe section on geoffs pipe was the old one reused, but i said that can`t be cause Geoff had to cut that section Anyways he`s sending the pipe`s off to another depot and will get back to me on monday with a price etc

This is bloody hard work

It is the flared ends that causes the grief!
I have found a place to get new hoses made up as per originals, I have a feeling a group buy might be called for
Any opinions

He will want a set as patterns which I have but as he is in Warwick if any one else is closer and has a spare set as a pattern this would help

Well what i nightmare i`ve had getting these hoses done, i left them with Pirtec and found out the sent them to Earls http://www.earls.co.uk/ and after a waste off a week they couldn`t do them. Anyways Bob put me on to a company called Power Steering Store, so sent the old hoses off and the next day the owner Richard rang me and said not a problem £80 the pair + £5 postage and the only part he`ll need to reuse is the Banjo part.
I`d said thay i`ll post his details on here as i think it`s a good contact to have
