I am sure this is somewhere around here, but I did searches and couldn't find a complete list.

Looks like the stock replacement filter is available from these manufacturers:

Again, I'm sure this is redundant, but it may help someone who (like me) couldn't find it through searching. I did find that a lot of the mfr's offer cross-reference part numbers to other brands that are flat out wrong (K&N points to a FRAM filter that's one of the flat panel variety), I think due to a similar model 33-2360. None of my local stores have anything for the Elan, other than the K&N on special order.

I guess everyone is going to have a different opinion on this topic. For myself, I was never able to get the chip to work very well and even after Doug burned me a couple test chips the performance was just not what I was getting with the MBV, not sure if it was an issue with the CA version ECU or just my system. One of the things I like about the MBV is that you are in control of the boost, you can adjust it one way and set it lower or high and then you can come back later and adjust it in the other direction or vis-versa, with the MBV you have the control to change it. With the chip, you get what you order and there is no adjusting, for some this is perfect and makes things very simple but for me I want the ability to control and adjust my boost myself. As for the K&N replacement pipe and filter sucking in hot underhood air that is just simply not a problem or a concern (remember there is an intercooler that all air will pass through), the replacement K&N filter and pipe has a greater exposed surface area with less restriction surrounding the filter that is able to draw in more air with less effort than the original filter and box. Keep in mind that the replacement filter sits on top of the air catch where the original filter sat so it gets a good flow of cold air. The original filter is restricted by the design of the box it is in and the motor has to pull its air through a small opening at the bottom of the filter box and this takes more effort; even though the original filter has a large surface area the air that is drawn into the motor is limited by the hole size in the bottom of the filter box.

I have also had this discussion with nitroman (chip vs MBV) and he might have some more interesting input on this issue.

As I recall, somebody took temperature readings in different areas under the hood (bonnet), and the temp in the area where the filter is isn't very hot. The area behind the engine/intake plennum is the hot spot. If you find the thread about putting vents in the hood (bonnet), you'll find a link to the one with the temp readings.

You can also confirm this the scientific way. After running at normal operating temp, open the hood and feel the trashcan. It's not particularly hot.

Isn't Marie's for the other pipe? The one between the intercooler and plennum, with BOV? I think Randy's just asking about the one between the filter and turbo.

Does anybody know if one meant for the Impulse Turbo will fit us?

Randy, I'm chroming the lower piece & putting Bill's (IsuzuPerformance) chrome intake/BOV on the upper. If that looks nice I'll have no need for the upper pipe/BOV. If you can hang on a month or so I'll sell you the upper with BOV for 1/2 whatever TopEnd is asking.

The first parts store I went to looking for something (blower motor I think), I told the first person at the counter what I needed, and it went like this:

Smaug is equipped with the Top End Performance setup, both the plenum/BOV pipe and the FOAST (filter-on-a-stick). Works well, though I'd prefer a decent airbox to the filter sitting in open under-bonnet. I need to measure ambient temp v. temp near filter in real-world conditions one of these days.

Oh, and if you DO need a BOV to fit the Top-End setup (or any other that uses the TurboXS part, please let me know. I want to replace my "WHOOSH" valve with one ducted back to the intake. I don't like the loud sound, though others like it a lot.

The temp or the air going into the open K&N filter under the hood will be slightly higher than the air coming from the duct into the trashcan. It will also be less restricted, and since it's going into the turbo and through the intercooler before it gets to the engine, I don't think the extra 5 degrees or so will have any impact at all. Also, as somebody already pointed out, since the open filter is sitting right over the opening from the outside air duct, that will make a difference. Brian sampled the temperatures with the trashcan in place and closed. with it removed, the air coming through the duct, that used to go into the trashcan, will cool that area under the hood. I'll bet if somebody took the same kind of readings Brian did, but on a car with the trashcan replaced by the open K&N setup, there would be almost no increased temperature there.

Yeah I did some photoshopping and liked the body-colored pipes better than chromed, and I couldn't justify coating over the chromed IsuzuPerformance pipe. Wish I could use the BOV from it though; it sounds cool whilst the TurboXS BOV sounds like a person with gas!
