I found some rust in the corners at each end off the sills when i was fitting the Roll Hoops, it wasn`t bad so used rust killer on some underseal.

In all honesty... Not really...

But here goes...

After years of reading numerous adverts saying Élans don't rust I thought that a little advice would help potential buyers and sellers make a more informed decision...

Firstly.... YES these cars do corrode... and what's more... they suffer from several other types of corrosion

With each type corrosion that may be evident it could also confirm other types may be present...

So here is the first find...

The Élan is notorious for leaks. So it came as no surprise to see heavy exfoliation corrosion on the aluminium seat spacers which was also a tell sign that the inner side sills would be heavily oxidized

So here is a couple of pics to Re-enforce a potential Problem

As for repair, I'm unsure if full replacement is possible, but a minor rework would be possible

Not surprising I suppose that the aluminium has oxidsied when you consider the problems the S1 Elises had. On some early S1 models they attached a rubber mat to the floor, this trapped moisture and the resulting oxidation caused actual holes to appear in the floorpan when the mats were lifted.

After stripping two tubs down I think I've worked out an external check to tell if the inner cill metal work is corroded... (No stripping required)

under the cills where they meet the floor there are a series of fastners these run the full length, if they're corroded the inside will be...

Check yours and scare yourself cilly

I'll do some pictures... I like pictures...

Check these fastners.... Mine show very little corrosion, but wait till you see the inside...( So any corrosion on the fastners is pottentially bad)

Another angle

Corrosion cill 2.jpg

The fastners tally up perfect, A point of note there doesn't seem to be any corrosion on the inside of the cill, (Not yet any way)

Check the front of the Chassis, lower tub mounting area and bolts

Corrosion 4.jpg

This could be curtains

Corrosion 5.jpg

I think so... A shot from inside the tub where your right foot normally goes
