I got one from Halfords (I was in a hurry) - can't remember which one it was, but it was in stock (part number OF20 rings a bell????). Not listed for the elan in the book on the shelf, but the guy on the parts desk can search for it on the computer.

I also just changed my oil filter for the first time since I got my Elan. I noticed that both the filter I removed and the new one I installed (Fram XG3593A from one of the cross reference lists on this forum) lack an integral check valve like I'm used to seeing on the filters I use for one of my other cars. Is there a filter cross reference that includes the integral checkvalve, and are such filters suitable or unsuitable for the Elan?

Without the integral check valve, removing the filter was a bit messy and I was unable to avoid spilling oil down the backside of my engine and down my arm (I was spilling oil before I even had the filter unscrewed all the way). A little oil on the engine is a great dirt magnet as all the road dust sticks to it, and getting the area squeaky clean afterwards is a nusiance. Obviously, I had the oil drained before I unscrewed the filter, but is there some special technique (or filter with integral check valve) that will reduce the spillage?

The rearranged componentry and standard air conditioning on Fed cars dramatically complicates oil changes compared to UK cars. While at Hethel, I was stunned at the access and how much easier this task must be on a UK car. As for filters, Knut, I went with a Mobil 1 M1-104 after a look around the web. More expensive but reportedly better-made inside than Frams. I also trained my local oil change shop to do the work. I take in oil and filter, they do the hard part then wash off the underside of the car and dispose of the old oil and filter for $18. Money well spent, I think.

Lotus are now supplying a Crosland oil filter number 672 the body is the same as the original white one. Lotus oil filter wrench that fits the dimples on the end of the original also fits the Crosland so one can assume the Crosland is the same but it is half the price of the white one from the Lotus dealers.

You're probably right. Crosland used to be based in Nottingham and sold to a lot of OEM's.

Local dealer also supplied a Crosland 672 this week - they say this is what Lotus now supply. Have placed another order to see if it is a temporary thing
The Crosland filter is not the same as the white OE one they supplied me with last year - maybe it was old stock?
Dia is same but Crossland is longer (Not so easy if to fit if, like me, you go in from the wheelarch)
Also the seal is a different style.
Thread is correct so it does fit.
Not so happy that they pass it off as OE - and charge the OE price for it!

I think (hope?) the concerns about the quality of aftermarket oil filters have been exaggerated in the past. As yet, I have not seen the "orange can of death" issues about Fram oil filters that are common on some internet sites. At the school shop we go through vast amounts of cars (literally cases and cases of Fram extra guard filters a year) and I have yet to see one Fram oil filter return split or leaking. I will say the wall thickness of the orange-canned Fram does not seem as great as the original Lotus filter. Other companies have filters that seem more robust.

The price of Fram filters has crept up every few months (at least here in Canada) for a few years to the point a more robust filter can be had for a few pennies more. Perhaps I am imagining this but does Walmart seem to have $2 "jumps" in filter prices at select times of the year? Where possible, I use NAPA-brand filters which are re-badged WIX filters.

Looks nicely made and has a non return valve and the nut on the can which should make it much easier to remove .Anyone had any experience with these

It was a doddle to change the filter with the driveshaft removed - BUT THATS NOT how I normally do it ! just seemed like a good idea whilst I await the arrival of the replacemant driveshafts

I also noticed quite a lot of scratching scuffing on the sump. as well the prongeron.

Might check the ride height when its screwed back together, as its fresh scratches and I fitted adjustable spring seat dampers last summer
