Dead cylinders 1-3

Postby Bernacchi » Sun 28.12.2008, 11:17

New problem for 2009

My car is running in cylinders 2-4 , the cylinders 1-3 are not working once removing the leads from these 2 had no effect on the engine.
i have no indicator lights
so i have problems with 1 cylinders of each coil

this problem had ocoured once and stoped by itself

can it be caused by the coil or by the control module ?

happy new year for you all

Thanks all!

The coil pack consists of two pairs (1&3, 2&4). It sounds like one half has failed, to me.

Think your cylinders are fine lol,

Does sound like one off the coils is down. I believe you can get coils from RockAutos

If your into fault diagnosis... you could transpose the coils and this will tell you if the coil is playing up or the base plate or something else...

But IMHO Sy is on the money

Ok, but my coils are marked 1-4 and 2-3 , this is a wrong indication ?

Ah, good point. Perhaps both coil packs are failing (being as they are the same age) and cannot build up a new spark as quickly as the engine needs it.
I would still try replacement coils first, because sooner or later you'll need them anyway so your money won't be wasted.

IMHO i think it`s the coils but also try changing/swapping the ignition leads

The fuel injector electricals are common - 1&3 and 2&4 (see circuit diagram). Suggest you look here first!

I know that we all jump on the 'coils breaking down' bandwagon (and it usually is!) but is there not a common/paired wiring on the injectors - do these run in the same pairing as the coils, or are they the same as the problems here???

There are pleanty of threads on injector problems, some indicate ECU faults, some just dirty contacts - I've never had any issues with mine, so can't really comment much more.......

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

I see you posted whilst i was still doing my 2 finger typing (seriously hampered by one of them being in plaster  )

but it appears i may have been right (at least with the theory, if not the problem  )

i also had a problem with the "black box panel" on the bulkhead. this had powdery terminals within it. a squirt with wd 40 jumped the car back into life.
it was on my BBR and was only fireing on 2 (not single point N/A daewoo essparro coil) ...

Once the fuel injector electricals are common - 1&3 and 2&4 some dirty contacts in the conector IHC - B5 can cause the problem

does anyone can help me with a simple question:

were can i find the IHC - B connector ?

thanks

More news about the problem

I started to try to test the energy in each fuel injector , but,
when i disconnected the energy to injector 3 the number 1 returned to operation and the car started to operate in 3 cylinders

So
i reconnect the injector 3 - the car back to 2 cylinders

But , in a strange way .....
when i disconnected the energy to injector 1 the number 3 returned to operation and the car started to operate in 3 cylinders

so the 2 coils seems to be ok

Any sugestions ?

regards

Well, I think it's safe to assume that you have identified the problem as being the electrical power (energy) supply to the fuel rails.
The exact nature of the problem is unknown and the cure is unknown - to me.
I agree that the coils seem to be OK.

I hope some of our more electrically/electronically-minded members will be able to further assist you.

Good luck and keep smiling.

You've obviously confirmed that it is injector related. From what you describe, I would suspect that somewhere between the ECU and injectors has become higher resistance than is should be - it is still low enough to drive one injector but not two in parallel. The most likely suspects are the connectors which have probably corroded so you should be able to fix it by cleaning them up.

Check the splice between the two (UY = blue/yellow) injector wires and the splice in the (RG = red/green) supply wires but it is most likely to be the injector harness connector (IHC) so follow the blue/yellow wire back. I'm sorry, I have no idea where it is, but here's a link to the electrical section in the Wiki and within that are the conventions and injector harness details.

Good luck!
