The transmission assembly may be removed from beneath the vehicle, after removing the underframe. what exactly is the underframe?

1. Preparatory: Drain the transmission oil. I cant get the drain nut out Remove both front road wheels and both front hub nuts. I dont have a socket big enough

The undertray is the Pongeron-thingy

I also wouldn't drain it.... If you do spill a bit clean it up afterwards

Todays news....it appears that there is something wrong with my gearbox

Sorry to read of your recent problems Matt...You couldn’t have worse weather for it!

How do you know it’s the gearbox? What’s been said is wrong with it...is it gear related?

The reason I ask...it’s very rare for someone to be told they have a gearbox problem... they’re usually the first person to know.

good point specky, i just need to workout how to get the hub nut off.

I also found out that the nearside jacking point is bust, which is making things a little more complicated. how bad is that and is there anything that can be done?

the gearbox is suspected as the tapping gets quicker with speed rather than rpm, its been suggested its something near or at the output shaft. But nothings confirmed as yet. im waiting to hear whats wrong with the one chris has, then we'll compare them. will post results when i get them.

It's not CVJ's (or even wheel bearings) is it?

MattDon wrote:I dont have a socket big enough

Not that it helps you but I've got two - I bought one when I did the Polo bearings and hadn't tidied up when I did the Elan, so went out and bought another one! :bonk:

IIRC you can still drive your car...

Sooooo.... remove the wheel... knock out the peined point on the nut....Take the wheel centre out...Replace the wheel.... drive to a garage and get them to crack the nut...

Mine were were well over three hundred newton meters... far to high...

As for the mount, I'm gonna guess the car has been jacked with a flat faced jack and it's pushed the bolt head into the internal metal work which is contained within the sill...

Can you make a piece of wood with a hole in that would spread the load whilst jacking

Just had a thought... don't forget the Lotus aftersales...

Drive shafts are dirt cheap at the moment and whilst you've got them out...........

and S.J.s have cheap wheel nuts at the moment in their sale

and another thought...

when you remove the O/S drive shaft, remove it complete with the half shaft... it just slips out and you don't have to get a new circlip and it's really easy...

Just unbolt from the mount from back of the engine...

I'll let you know

I wouldn’t change the gearbox on the strength of what’s been said Matt. I’d either rule out the other possibilities or wait till it gets worse.

thankyou so much for all the replies, it means alot to have people rally around when things get tough.

RayD, Im not replacing the gearbox at the moment, im removing the box from the BRG or atleast trying, i'll proberly get chris to check it over before i do anything drastic. The noise is pretty bad, it sounds similar to the tractors i use at work. Ie i can hear it tapping over the noise of the engine 5000rpm and a loud peco.
Its not a cv joint as it happens all the time and is no worse under lateral load which id assume would rule out the bearings too.

just to recap the noise is a tapping, its speed related and becomes more of a whine at around 50mph, it only occurs underload, i can feel the tapping through the passangers footwell, everything else with the car is normal.

Ideas on what to replace while im at this job are REALY helpful, i think that this box is going to be temporary and i'll get the one from loki fully rebuilt... if i can find the cash.

Possibly a really dim suggestion - it's not a noisy CAS is it?

can they get that noisey? and would it not be noisey in neutral too, and possibley related to rpm?

Only under load? It's inner CV joint then.
The driveshaft assemblies come complete with both inner and outer CV (and new boots and ready greased of course).
I got mine for £93.61 + VAT from the parts sale back at the end of Nov.
Geoff listed both part numbers and prices here:
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=12784&p=175400&hilit=C100R0002F#p175400
Just to make sure you should pop along to a garage and ask them to confirm which one it is for you.
The garage I use did so at no charge. It only took them about 10 mins to verify it.
That's just to save you from swapping out the wrong one.
However, if one's already dying then unless one side of your car has done more mileage than the other, then the other driveshaft won't be far behind!
So buy both because you'll need them sooner or later anyway.
If it's the nearside one then you'll also need a driveshaft oil seal otherwise you'll end up doing the job twice (like I did)! There are some very helpful hints here: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=13957&p=181967

I agree with you Neil, out of all the possibilities it’s the one I’d put my money on.
