LGM Turbo Group Buy , Which Clutch / Plugs / etc

Postby abmunro » Sat 17.01.2009, 22:16

Which clutch are the people considering using when they have installed the new TURBO.

I checked the "Shark" thread and although Costas mentioned new clutch he does not say what make.

Anybody thought about it yet?

Cheers

Yes, I thought about it and then got sidetracked with an LSD upgrade at the same time. .... There are several old threads which deal with the subject and I have read most of them ....it was a few months ago so it's all a bit vague, I remember that changing the flywheel is not worth the effort and I "think" that unless you go really high with the BHP the standard clutch can cope....then I would go ask Marie!
Sorry not too helpful, some more reading required.....well until some one with more knowledge comes along!

Plus I still have to order the 550cc injectors and the 3bar MAP sensor.....roll on monday!!

The Turbo is good for 330 BHP

I'm in same boat as you.

I have not ordered 550 injectors etc yet.

Cheers

I fitted an uprated clutch (clutch specialities I think) along with a lightweight flywheel and a Quaife LSD some time ago after having bought the parts in a group buy even longer ago. The Clutch group buy was organised by a long since departed member called Gerome, his forum name was Game On. I 'm scrabbling a bit here but the standard clutch is certainly up to what the latest Everest chip or a BBR kit can produce in power and torque. However, I think it would be asking a lot for it to cope with the potential of the Garret T2560 upgrade if it's taken to it's potential. As I had to drop the gearbox to fit the Quaife it made sense to do the clutch at the same time (I agree the flywheel is probably of little benefit, but it's nice to have and was easy to do at the same time). I have, and still am progressively increasing the ability of the car to cope with the power I anticipate the turbo upgrade will bring. I still have a new radiator, my Samco hoses and a new intercooler to fit before the turbo upgrade is fitted. I also need to buy the turbo, injectors and MAP sensor, and unless ESM works his magic a Haltech and dyno time for mapping, so still a good way to go yet.

Thanks Nige, MattD already asked the question on this thread and received a partial answer....

I think the only two people who have pushed the limits out this far >280BHP are Nitroman and LGM.....aplologies I struggling on a really poor connection tonight, I noticed that Dico had an uprated clutch did he fit it?

Dico, fitted the same clutch & fly wheel as Nige.

IIRC Davidjt got a full disc clutch from the states but cost £400+

IMHO if your sticking with the Chip & stock injectors with the Garrett Turbo then maybe the Stock clutch will be ok, but if your going for the full upgrade for more Horses then you`ll need to upgrade the clutch.

Wonder if there`s a company in the uk that could do us a competition clutch :?

The stock clutch will do ok up to 1-1.2 bar. The advantage of a lightened flywheel is minimal with the engine acceleration capable with the stock IHI. With the Garrett it will help as the lower weight of the reciprocating mass coupled with the added power will cause a much faster acceleration. Good for track, no real point on the street. I have a 6 puck clutch with a high pressure plate. Also not really practical for the street but very useful on the track.

I ended up using a full-metallic 4 puck clutch with a high pressure plate on my nitrous car. It wore out a 90% up-rated clutch I had previously fitted in about 2 weeks. Consider though, that the nitrous kicked in with full-power, as there was no lag-time from turbo-spool. If possible, a full-metallic clutch is best avoided as it takes an extremely vigilant foot to drive smoothly.

this site has some listed for the Impulse which I believe should fit the Elan
http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/searchp ... Category=7

It also lists the HP they are rated to take which is useful if you are looking at high horses.

My standard clutch is doing just fine with all the bits and bobs fitted. The EBC is showing max boost acheived 16psi

Saying that, I dont know exactly when it was fitted; that is, if it is the original clutch (nearly 112k miles) or if it has been replaced inbetween. I cant find anything in the paperwork I have for the car.

If someone was to order a clutch from them, what engine code would they need to use?
I know ours is a 4XE1, but thats listed as a non-turbo Impulse engine. :?

Tony, the info you have posted relates to my query in the post above it.

The engine spec is for a 4XF1 and not a 4XE1 which the Elan's is.

Yep I have the same clutch as Nige. Can't recall the make other than it was a 6 puck job. Quite agressive and not particularly nice for street use.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a less aggressive clutch option? Realisically I will be going to the track once every three months at most......

Re: LGM Turbo Group Buy , Which Clutch / Plugs / etc

Postby abmunro » Wed 21.01.2009, 19:45

I started this thread to ask about the clutch.

But I started to wonder what else is going to be required?

Can we compile a list with suggested Manufacturers / models / estimated cost etc

1. 550 injectors ? ?
2. higher temp plugs ? ?
3. High flow air filter ? ?
4. High flow exhaust ? ?

Please feel free to alter / populate the list

This will help me / others to work out buget

Cheers

Injectors.: RC Engineering PL8 550cc
MAP sensor: 3BAR MSD Bosch type
Exhaust: 2.5" min. For best response
Air Filter: I really don't like filters that use an oil bath. Especially on a turbo as the oil can gum up the impeller.

I switched to LGM air filter setup after seeing the oil/humidity condensation from the K&N filter actually ate through my main coolant hose. The oil was also coated everywhere inside my intake pipes

the IMPULSE RS and 4XF1 use the same clutch, the NA 4XE1 are smaller in diameter.

honestly, i don't see the practicality in buying a $600 when you can get a Clutch Master for around $150.

i have a stage 3 or upgraded pressure plate and segmented kevlar disc (sprung) and it ran me under $450 to the door. it is rated for over 300hp.

CLUT 09-017-HDTZ <=== part number, can be found for a good price at www.horsepowerfreaks.com

hope this helps.
