Hi, Can anyone help please. I have a 1991 BRG turbo, with a 12 month mot at time of sale. It is a bit untidy and paint is looking decidedly average. How much should i advertise it for? Anyone interested? Steve.

think you'll need to give a few more details to get an accurate price, miliage, most recent service, any work thats been done, what needs doing, etc. id hazard a guess on what you said at around £3000-£3500.

The cheapest Ive seen is £2000 for a basket case sold as parts .Going off the second hand part prices.Any running car has got to be worth £2000.Just for the parts.And the most expensive was £17000 i think.For a green s2 with 8000 miles on the clock.That's over the last 12 months.But these are unusual times.So yours sounds like its in the middle of the bottom half . Take a look at Phil's red one. And Clemo's blue one.

They're immaculate. They give a good idea of the current price ceiling for a 100,000+ mile car in top notch order.

It sounds as though yours is not in quite such good nick, yes?

Is it much lower mileage? If not, then with tatty paintwork, it's probably worth £2,500-£3,000. (Eg roughly the cost of a respray less than theirs).

How tatty is the interior?

And it'll be worth less if the cambelt needs doing. Less if it's half leather. Less if it doesn't have a full history. Less if it has a dodgy hood or an opaque rear screen. Less if the windows, mirrors etc. don't work fully.

Will B sold a high mileage slightly tatty one for £2150, IIRC, but he is Will B, with a hell of a reputation and he said it was a great drive.

At the beginning of the year, I thought that a rough guide was as follows:

I've watched and recorded 269 (mainly eBay, but including some AT and PH) sales or attempted sales since last May.

Of those, 32 have actually gone for less than £3,000, 41 have asked more than £8,000 (sometimes the same car is counted several times as the price drops....).

The bulk go for £3,000 - £6,000.

Just ammended my prices document - it currently has 305 entries.

It's quite nice to see how many cars are still active, and how many new owners are experiencing the joys of Elan ownership.

Looking at it, I was astonished to see how many cars have been for sale for months (since last summer), and at how many trade cars have been progressively reduced in price several times - often in £1,000 increments.

Thanks for the info. i think i'm being a bit negative about my car, it is a long way from being a basket case sounds like a £3000 car all day long. May even keep it another year, Steve.

Interested to know what mine is worth, K reg turbo S1 Steel Blue half leather, lived outside all its life so hood needs replacing and paint lacquer is flaking all over BUT she has done only 32000 miles from new and was owned previously by a doctor friend who serviced it fully so mechanically she is perfect.

As part of my insurance negotiations I've been researching current S2 prices. Currently they seem to be in this approx range:

Asking Price - Mileage
£6000 - 100k+
£7000 - 70-90k
£8000 - 50-70k
£9000 - 40-50k
£10000+ - 40k and under

Asking Prices rise rapidly with the low mileage ones at the top end and conversly flatten off for the cheaper - higher mileage cars.

I paid £9000 For my Palacio with 30000 and full history. Without any modifications.And that's a 95 S2.That was just before Xmas. Max It was up for £10 and that was private.

Sounds nice. That's such low mileage that it may well 'buck' general rules, and steel blue is a rare enough colour to add further confusion to the mix.

There haven't been enough cars sold in the last year with less than 40,000 miles for me to even guess at a band, let alone a ceiling price. (And I suspect that the price bands I posted are out of date, and a bit 'optimistic'.

Of course no-one can price a car accurately without seeing it, driving it, and poring over the minutiae of the service history.

And though people do look at mileage, the wisest LECkers will tell you hand on heart that they'd rather have a car that has been DRIVEN and SERVICED properly than a car that has sat in a garage unmoving, and making occasional short hops, even if the well driven car has many more miles.

As long as you're happy with the price you paid, for the car you bought, that's the main thing. At these prices, depreciation will be negligible, even if you're not going to make money on your investment.

The Sportmotive S2 was up for about that price before Xmas (higher mileage, but trade, with a warranty, and in stonking nick) but is now £2K cheaper.

When Clemo got rid of his lovely (but 90k) Silk Red S2, I was among many who thought that someone had got one heck of a bargain - and indeed they had. But I'll lay good money that he'd have struggled to get the same price today.

The Elan is the only car i no of that the standard car at factory speck.Is worth less than one with mods.We made a couple of mistakes.We percifically looked for a factory speck car.As you do .Most other models you wouldn't touch if they had modifications .I would automatically think boy racer or its been screwed all its life.The Elan is different i think due to the type of person who are into them.Yes i agree to buy a car that has just hundreds of miles between MOTs has its pitfalls.Stuck waste-gates ,Brakes working poorer then stock are just couple of things i had go wrong. I bought the Silk Red S2 from Clemo. Though it has done more miles than either of my previous Elans (my first was an SE, bought in 2002 with 22K on the clock, which I traded in three years later for an S2 with 66K), its engine is definitely the sweetest of the lot, followed by my first S2 and then my SE.

All three of my cars had decent service histories - the major difference between them being the frequency with which they were used. In my experience, Elans definitely benefit from being used as long as they have been properly maintained.
