As I suspected my wastegate was sticking again (probably because it's been laid up since September) so Everest was more like Table Mountain, since I've got some stainless bolts for the heatshields and I want to fit a new O2 sensor, I've just been out and released it - it's cold and dark so I didn't take any pictures but it's only taken me half an hour. I'll update the Wiki write up and hopefully post some pictures tomorrow.

Ive managed to undo the three bolts for the wastegate bracket. When i pull the wastegate bracket and the round alloy tank thing that i cant remember the name of. Towards me and then wiggle left and right it moves free. When i try and put the bracket close to where it should be fixed and try and move it. It feels stiffer . I'm not sure if this is the bracket scraping or its stiffer at the wastegate end. Its very close. I could do with being able to see the movement of the rod at the wastegate end. Removing the heat shield looks a nightmare. Is there a bolt on the left hand side? Does the one there go through the heat shield? Andy

Looks like I'm going to have to remove the heat shield in the morning. I'm going to have to sort out my 10mm spanner its only 10cm long and it could do with being 30cm. I am pretty confident that the last two times Ive wiggled it. Its felt as loose as it can get. But this time I'm going in through the heat shield and am going to remove the cir clip. I just need to eliminate the wastegate as the problem. Plus Ive not had three wiggles in a week since i was 21. Does the third bolt on the wastegate bracket matter if you have lost it? Andy

It's possibly lodged in the fan shroud (that's where mine ended up) so it would be worth retrieving it otherwise the fan could throw it into the radiator. Best found found from underneath by lying on the ground, pushing your head up to the engine and look forwards - there are plenty of ledges to feel for it! You should replace it - it's a bog standard M6 x 10mm and I've got a bagful in my garage after going stainless!

I will try and pop one in after Ive removed the heatshield. So that's 10mm ratchet spanner M6, !0mm bolt. And one midget. Andy

If i try the wiggle again and have no joy. What is next to look at. Is there anything else to look out for whilst Ive got the heat shield off? Andy

What a nightmare the left hand bolt on the heat shield was cross threaded. Got it out but how do you put it back? The wastegate is as loose as a loose thing. What else is there to check? Andy

Everything is back together even the third bolt on the wastegate bracket. Still no boost. I'm stuck now is there any ideas? Andy

I'm sure you've checked this - but when I test drove my car, I also had no boost. It turned out that the seller had taken it to a garage to do a few maintenance things for me (coolant flush, oil change, etc) and they hadn't firmly connected all of the intake plumbing properly, and they'd wiggled free. Was pretty simple to get everything back working again. Also, the vacuum line to the boost sensor thingy (rubber guy on the left) was cracked & presumably leaking.

I was thinking whether there was any pressure coming down the actuation pipe to work the actuation capsule. Or can the rod get stiff in the actuation capsule. Andy

I'm not sure about how you could test the actuation capsule, unless you have a suction pump. (Now, if you knew a nurse who may be able to borrow one from a hospital/ambulane/paramedic etc, then the ones for clearing vomit from an airway are ideal )

If you undo the pipe and apply a vacuum to the end, you should get the wastegate rod to move visibly.

As a thought, if you undo one end of the pipe from the intercooler to the inlet - green arrow on photo......

with the engine running you should be able to feel / hear the pressure of the 'boosted' air coming from the pipe from the intercooler (where it goes into the wing).

The engine will not be pulling air from the pipe with it disconected, but the turbo should still be pushing air through it.

I can't remember if it is noticable at idle speeds, but with a blip of the throttle, it is! This should at least confirm that the compressor wheel is spinning and pressurising the air to give boost.

If you try driving the car with one end of the pipe disconected, then it will be running atmospheric pressure....maybe you will notice a difference with it connected vs disconnected, which will indicate that the turbo is (at least partially) working

I no this makes me look stupid but when i disconnect the pipe from the wing which way will the air be coming from? From the wing or to the wing? Andy
