Although I have not sent mine back, I must admit to being pretty underwhelmed by the quality of them myself. Looking at mine on the back (flat face) they appear to have been peeled from the mould tool as opposed to being removed, I think this suggests that the tool had cooled prior to removal. The result of this is hairline cracking in the seal itself. If this face was exposed to the elements then I suspect it would act like a sponge !!!!

Also quite disappointed with the quality of both of them...
Didnt see much point in complaining about it, as at the end of the day, I need them; not rushing to fit them though, I think I'll wait until the screen needs changing..
At least the price was reduced!

I got one several months ago from an LEC source unnamed. It was new, old-stock, still in the Lotus plastic bag. I installed it, and it's a sponge. I've now got another new one from SJ Sportscars, but haven't installed it yet, so I don't know.

AFAIK it's a closed cell style foam, so as such shouldn't absorb water even if there are imperfections in the finish;
I guess however that it breaks down with age and as you quite rightly say, turns to a sponge...
Any old stock ones (and those fitted to most of the cars) are pushing 20yrs old now, and age will be taking it's toll.
