CREAKY HARDTOP

Postby Bolsom » Sun 19.04.2009, 08:26

My hardtop which I have had for about 8 months has started creaking. It seems to come from the around where the top is held by the lefthand front clamp.
Has anyone had this problem and know if this can be adjusted/cured? I have hesitated to play with it in case I make it worse.

I also get a fair bit of wind noise and leaking at this point. I am going to adjust the window angle to ease this problem. I have also thought of making a softwood
former to to mould the sealer around ths area. Has anyone a better method/idea?

the creaking is normal after a settling in period, you just need to tighten things down slightly, i put a couple washers under the clasp grip at the front that attatches to the windscreen, also if i remember i slightly enlarged the holes in the rear clasp grips which gave a few more mill movment which was enough to tighten it down nicely.

if the wind noise it at the front i bet once its tightened it will go, but if your talking about around the window sills i have the same issue and have been thinking about a solution, my first port of call is making sure my windows are right, then im going to look at either a rubber seal to go around the outside to allow better air flow, then id look at pushing the seals out a little, but i cant see it coming to that.

dont worry about the hardtop, i was scared silly but its very simple and theres not much to go wrong

Vaseline!!! Tried on my M3 cabriolet, Ferrari 355 GTS's and SLKs works every time!

Definitely NOT vaseline which is petroleum based and will ruin seals. Try Silicone grease if you must.

Can't comment on ELAN seals, but I never had any trouble and it was Ferrari who reccomended the fix!

But that's not an educated statement just one of experience, so maybe in the long term Geoff might be spot-on...

Latex DOES NOT like petroleum jelly.

The solvents in vaseline will rot latex, but I do not know the composition of the seals - if they contain natural rubber, do not use vaseline.

Someone else has suggested Silicone grease - and this is what we recomend and use use in the hospital ;-)

If you cant find a specialist seller, and you can cope with the percieved embarassment, get some KY jelly down at Boots.

I guess you can tell the Boots assistant that you probably need two tubes to cover the entire length... 8)

At my age it is as stated, creaking and not squeaking.

Thanks for the suggestions.
