I recall this from my first Elan many years ago and am seeing this in theElan I just acquired. When turning the wheel, there's a squeaky and/or squishy noise coming from the column.
Anyone have any idea how to remedy this???? Thanks!

If you mean a snakey hissy noise at low speeds - that is quite normal and nothing to worry about (they all do that, sir)

If it's an annoying squeak when you turn the steering wheel (and not just at full lock), then move the carpet and soundproofing away from rubbing the base of the steering column. Give it a squirt of silicon lubricant while you're there.

Hi John, this isn't happening at full lock. Anytime I turn the wheel I get this noise. Its coming from inside the plastic casing directly behind the steering wheel. That's the piece that the indicator and wiper stalks come out of. Is there carpet and soundproofing in there or were you referring to a different location???
Thanks!

Elanlover,
The carpet and soundproofing are on the floor at your feet near the pedals. The whole column turns and when it does so, it rubs on the carpet and soundproofing if they are misaligned. Realign them and spray with lubricant.
It may sound like the noise is coming from the shroud at the top of the column, but I think it's more likely that this is merely conducting and amplifying the sound.
It takes 5 seconds to fix. Try it.

I'll try this - my wife is giving me the "your car is not as nice as my Lexus" look lately. I reply with a "Yeah but we don't see TWELVE of my car in every parking lot" look. Very intense.

Did you find a cure to your squishy/squeltchy steering, mine does the same...

It's the underdash elanpython Marcus, and totally normal.
Start worrying when there is no noise!
