Paint

Postby kurgen » Mon 20.04.2009, 08:45

Hi! I'm trying to match frost silver to another models paint...ie ford, vauxhall. Does anyone know if it was used by another manufacturer and if so what they call it?

Do not think trying to match a colour to a different manufacturer will work as paint colours can vary quite a lot just for one model of car, never mind different manufactures.
Ford diamond white is not the same as Vauxhall glacier white and then there are different tones for each of those, hence the paint codes on the car.
Variations can also be just due to the way the paint is applied and the primer used.
Why not work with the paint code you have???

Hmm! I realise that, I'm just thinking of painting the "B" post covers, so as long as it's a near match it doesn't really matter that much..

If you are after an aerosol can you can get these in the correct colour with the paint code. Some paint suppliers do them

Failing that you will need to get the closest via the colour swatches the paint places carry including Halfords.

Most paint changes colour with age. ICI Calypso Red is an extreme case but it does illustrate the point.
In the case of metallics, these can be darkened by reducing the pressure of the spray gun, so the quality of the match is down to the skill of the sprayer. The lack of adjustability makes aerosols particularly hard to match.

Thanks for your replies, but i will bet a pound to a pinch of salt lotus didn't mix their own paint!! It'll have been one of the big boys colours under a different name. just findin which one. Failing that i'll just spray 'em matt black

You may find that one of the wheel paints (Hycote Alloy etc) is a close enough match if there is nothing on the shelf at Halfords???

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Good point. I'll check my local auto factors this morning, that way i can take the cans outside to get the best match. It's just when i had my TVR the colour of that was actually a ford colour so matching was easy.
