I went over to Didcot a couple of nights ago to see the red Elan on Autotrader at £4,495 ono (H286YFL).

It's being sold by a serial car trader who operates from his own house. He is Mr Tony Anchors, 01235 819745 or
07768 422886

I've never seen a car quite like it for mixing very good with really quite ordinary.

The bad:
She's externally tatty (pink in places, orange peeled in others), with near-matt (but completely uncurbed) alloys and poor A-pillar seals.

Internally she's better, with a postage stamp sized patched hole in the driver's seat (which is half leather) but otherwise pretty unmarked, and with uncracked, unchipped escutcheons (if you want to donate the driver's side one as a thank you when you buy it, that would be great).

The driver's side mirror adjusts up and down, but not in and out.

There's a small slit (2-in) on the passenger's side of the hood, behind and above the window. It would be easy to patch.

The good:
She has a comprehensive and full service history, latterly with Sportmotive in Salisbury. This proves the low mileage (72,000 miles). She comes with 12 months MoT and six months tax.

Everything else works fine - mirrors, lights, fogs, wipers, washers, hazards, the lot.

The rear screen is clear.

There's no sign of damp, so she doesn't seem to leak badly, and I suspect that the carpets would clean up a treat.

She has a dry boot, and everything's present and correct in it - including the toolkit with penknife, and an aftermarket breathable waterproof whole car cover..

There are two alarm/immobiliser fobs.

The great:
The car pulls like a train - she must be the most eager unchipped Elan I've driven. She accelerates rapidly, and has not the faintest sign of overboost or boost creep.

Though the brakes are standard, they're very good by Elan standards.

Steering is fine, and the ride is good.

She's a very useable, driveable car as she is, though I'd refurb the wheels and bung a set of Toyo T1Rs on, and I'd buy a pot of Bostik 2402 and patch the hole in the roof. I'd get new A-pillar seals, and get a good respray some time down the line. None of the lacquer is peeling.

The seller will take a significantly lower offer than the asking price - if anyone's interested in the figure mentioned, drop me a PM.

After the Cullompton car on eBay (130k miles and with carpeted elbow recesses and escutcheons reached £1,750) there's every indication that prices are edging upwards, and I have to say that at the price you could get this car for, it's a tatty beaut!

Hi all, I'm looking to get an Elan to replace my last one that was unfortuantely written off. I've seen a couple I like the look of, and wondering if anyone has any views / knows the cars in question.

The first one is a Blue S2 on Autotrader:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/ww ... RegLetter=
I think this one has been there for a long time?...

The other one is an SE on Ebay and Pistonheads, so will start a new thread for that one in the Ebay section.

Thanks :)

I looked at this car in April see my post in this cars on ebay thread - at that tine the car was also listed on ebay classifieds. The dealer Paul seem liked a nice guy. I offered him £4k which I thought was the right price but he said as it was the beginning of the season he would hold out for something very close to his asking price but did mention if it was still there in June then he might lower his price!

Good Luck

Nick, spoke to him today hoping to view today but he was unavailable, he did mention he had been offered £4k but would apparently rather burn it first  may look at it next week.

I spoke to him about a month ago and managed to talk him down to £4,500 without even seeing it.
It looks like a nice car and he said it has an extensive history.
I didn't view it in the end but it looks well worth a look.
Good luck

Browsing through Aututrader today and noticed a S2 for sale down here on the Island - I was beginning to really believe I had the only Elan here on the IOW. Looks a nice car and I wish the seller luck but I thought the price was really high ( nearly £10K ) Was an S2 but with 70K+ miles. Anyway as I said good luck to him/her - makes me feel good owning mine ( Albeit an SE but with less miles and arguably the same condition ). Almost tempted to put mine back on the market ( only kidding !! )

A chap over on SELOC spotted this 1990 Elan with 94k miles for £3,995 near to him in Hampshire. Looks to be an NA and has had Mini seats put in. WillB's already mentioned that it might be a car that was on ebay earlier in the year. Chap dropped by out of hours for a quick look:

"Roof has two holes in identical place either side ( repaired with glue )
Roof seals around windows shot to bits.
Door window seals perished and cracked.
Seats are from a new style mini ( I would bet that they have been changed due to leaking roof as carpets look filthy )
Fluid on rear right wishbone ( Possible brake line leaking )
Original bushings in wishbones ( look like upgrade would be required.)
Alloy wheels are well gone need complete refurb.
Wishbones look rusty.

...this car looks like a car thats been sold on Ebay as spares or repairs. With a bit of money it could be sorted...

This is without even seeing under bonnet or starting the thing."

"£4000 is cheap for Elan"....

You can't say that here!

(No comments on pricing except on 'that thread' - and especially not if your comment is likely to provoke 'debate').

This one (an NA, H194UJX) failed to attract any bids at a £2,500 start price on eBay as item number 140319377664 in late May (seller Barney 10).

It had failed to sell at £2,750 start price as 140289178095 in December 2008 from the same seller.

It had earlier achieved £2,750 on eBay as 330273225394 in September 08 (Nottingham seller) with 91 k on the clock.

Sorry, I'd just pasted the feedback from the chap and had mis-read the blurb so thought discussion of non-LEC cars was OK. Now edited...

It's not like it's the kind of bargain that you can't help saying: "Holy cow that's a great buy" about....

unlike your car, which looks fantastic and is what even I would call a bargain.

Thanks for your kind words here and over on SELOC! Always tricky to know what price to pitch our cars at given all the variables on condition, mods, history etc as well as the general state of the market. Think mine is what you'd call "priced to sell" and it has been getting a good level of interest already in the first week since the ad went out.

I bought this Elan yesterday:

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/ww ... RegLetter=

Managed to get it for £4,700 as there are a few things that need doing. The front brakes are pretty badly warped (getting those fixed tomorrow). The boot lock tumber isn't attached - this needs a simple bracket I think. A few scuffs / paint defects incuding the bumper, the wing mirror and where the hood rests on the hood cover, meaning a bit of a respray is needed. The passenger side headlamp bulb is out, and the headlights are a bit rusted too, so will probably replace those so they look nicer. Finally, the rear passenger side wheel seems to have a slightly loose bearing. The seals are pretty worn all round, and the car does leak when it rains. However, the seller chucked in a new set of hood seals, and I'll be buying some new A-Frame seals too.

There are a few other minor things that I'm not too bothered about - the glovebox handle has come off, the ashtray has fallen out, the voltometer (is this what it's called?) light doesn't work.

Overall though, seems a very nice car for £4.7k.
