Boot/Trunk Lock

Postby Coupeboy » Mon 20.04.2009, 22:16

Ever since the MoT tester opened my boot the key slit has been rotated 180 degrees from where it was. He must have put the key in upside down and forced it before realising. Anyway my point is that the lock will open very easily, with anything, that's poked in very slightly. Is there a fault/fix for this or an alternative lock? It certainly isn't secure if anyone were to medle with it. I rotated the inner bit back to where it was but the ease with which I can get in is disconcerting. On the bright side I can't 'lock' my keys inside the boot! Does the S2 have a better lock with a key that has more than 2 ridges cut in it?

I know the locks on the S2 are different and the same key fits all including the ignition.
As this thread had been started it seem the place to ask the question.
Does any one know which Vauxhall they are from and or part numbers?

I intend to change mine as the little key for the door and boot locks is a pain + having a separate one for the ignition.
Another job to do!!

Just bought a replacement lock set from SJ sportscars for £60 (boot and two doors plus two keys) but they were adamant that the locks did not change for the S2.

Bob, are you certain it fits all? As in one key for ignition, trunk/boot, doors and glove box? If so I smell another project

It does state in the parts list doors, boot (trunk), ignition, glove box latch so that would be all the key holes then

I can absolutely confirm that on the S2 the same key is used for the ignition, door locks and boot lock, the glovebox lock is different and has a seperate key. 2 keys were supplied with the S2. The 'main' key is also the alarm fob and has a single button on one side and a Lotus logo on the other. The other key has a dumb fob and the metal key part is the only functional element.

So then, if one were to order the S2 "kit" with all the locks as per Bob's post does a key come with it (this may be a stupid question but best to ask it anyway)? Can anyone comment on how easy it is to replace the door, boot and ignition locks?

Think I have got it now.

The lock set must include 2 keys for the boot, doors and ignition along with new barrels plus another key/keys for the glove box and another barrel and I do not care about the fob button or no button.

Bet it's an arm and a leg as I did enquire about lock sets for an Astra of the same age and the local Vauxhall dealer said they were £170.00 but we were guessing at the parts.
He did say if I could come up with the GM code off them he could then match it against the GM part, he seemed to be a bit of a Lotus enthusiast as he did say he went to Hethel last year and offered to cross reference any GM codes. Not sure he knows what he might have let him self in for but I can but try.

Exactly the same for me, 1 key does the lot, glovebox included. :D

Nige, is your glovebox key similar to the ignition, but with a squared off tip?

I have S2 '048' and it has 3 keys - one for the ignition, one for the doors & boot and one for the glove box. My old SE had 3 keys and I had hoped that things would be better with an S2. However, they are worse as all 3 keys are large Vauxhall items, at least one of my SE keys was smaller.

However, as some ‘pond life’ has attempted to get into my boot and made the ability to get into it rather unpredictable, I shall now have to replace lock this which might leave me with four keys (AAAGGH).

Did we get a definitive answer as to what a complete key replacement 'kit' would involve? I would like one key (like most other cars) for ignition, doors, boot and glove box. If anybody has managed this or has any tips on who could supply this I'd much appreciate a pointer.

I may be in the same predicament but with different symptoms...
I fear I may have put the boot-lock back upside down and now cannot get access to the boot. As a result vacation was spent in our day to day car and not the S1 M100.
Previously, the boot lock had a habit of working itself lose every now and then and I the habit of putting it back with its clip.
Only now, the boot is truly locked, the key turns and nothing clicks and probing with a bit of wire has no effect. I have seen the double porthole solution but was hoping there is an easier, less invasive technique out there.
Can anyone help? Weather is beautiful but we are limited to day-trips.

I have found a supplier (locksmith) who is going to supply what I think is the correct locks to convert an SE locks to the S2 type AND he will match the new locks to the ignition key.
If you have a mix and match of keys he can also retumble locks so they are for the same key but only with the S2 type locks
E.G. if you have a S2 with three keys one for the ignition another for the doors and yet another for the boot they can all be retumbled to the same as the ignition key.

Very slighty off topic...

But can he retumble an N/A boot lock to match the N/A doors?

Do not know but there is one way to find out and that is to ask the question.
Once I have swapped the locks on my N/A I will see what he says as he will probably need the locks to see if it can be done.
Failing that do you want the set of three (same 2 keys for all three) I remove from my N/A assuming it all goes according to plan.

I managed to do the same - but had to canibilise a couple of old lock barels to get enough spare parts of the correct orientation - for a man with the (right) spare parts, it should be a quick job :?

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Apart from driving my Elan in this fantastic weather, I've been doing a few minor jobs on it as well. One of the jobs was to sort out the boot lock which, if not opened very carefully, the barrel would spin around with the key.

When I removed everything, barrel and clip, the little tinker in the photograph below also fell out. It took me a little while to realise that this should be firmly attached to the boot panel, inside the lock opening. This then stops the lock barrel from spinning. I've attached it back temporarily with blu-tack, which appears to be holding OK, but I would like to fix it back permanently.

Can anybody suggest a really strong adhesive that allows a bit of movement initially but sets and grips with a "will of iron". I would normally use Araldite but, with the restricted access, I'd probably end up with it all over the place including the lock mechanism!

Thanks in advance
