Erm................ sorry about this, but how does the front of the dash come off?[/quote]

I wouldn't do that - - that seems a lot of work.
I've got a similar problem to investigate - mine only blows into the foot-wells so the windscreen mists up. I'm going in through the hole left by taking out the radio, which I'm changing anyway - so much quicker and easier. Radio is secured at the rear by a nut you get at first by removing the glove box. Move the catch sideways so it swings right down and remove the hinge pins if you wish for a bit more room to move. Reach in there and round to the back of the radio to undo the nut. Once the radio is out most of what you need to see & get at for heater vent system is right there!

Leave me alone, I think I know what I'm doing.

OK thanks for that, certainly seems a preferable way of dealing with the problem.

Now this is getting ridiculous!!! Took the radio out and from what I can see and feel, everything is fine with the variety of pipes for the heater ducting. With the fan on full blast, I can detect a very small amount of air coming out of the foot well ducts and I think from the face level ones as well but it's hard to tell for sure because air is belting out of the windscreen vents.
How likely is it for the vacuum reservoir itself to fail I wonder? I have no idea what is actually inside one. :?

I had this problem.
It was a 1.50 GBP L-shaped piece of rubber, under the bonnet in the centre just next to the bulhead behind the DOHC at the top. Very easy to find. Once it's perished as mine was, the air won't direct through to the vents. I was getting only the one passenger side vent until the grommet was replaced. Simple!

Right, thanks for that. I am certainly getting to know what's under the bonnet of an Elan, quite intimately :-D I'll look for a perished piece of rubber!
Some years ago I had a TVR 1800S and that was always great fun applying ingenuity to trying keeping it running but of course it was nowhere near as complicated as the Elan!!! I also had a Caterham Seven for a few years ............................... yeah, right, they are just insane! Fantastic fun...........................but insane!

Well time has moved on and I have been addressing some other niggly problems with the car, but I still haven't resolved the lack of air on the footwells and face vents. I am pretty sure that I have checked every pipe and joint and I got fed up with making no progress so have left it. Now I need to sort this once and for all as it is annoying me to think that something isn't working and I can't find out how to fix it :bonk:
Anyone got any constructive ideas as to how to solve this?

Hot and cold from the windscreen vents, which can be regulated by the temperature control knob as normal. :smt039

That's good...

Your issue is behind the dash, be it the heater controller or the heater itself

First check the vacum connection on the back of the controller

Then it's on to the heater assy, Broken links and vacum controllers

OK, thanks for that. I will start delving into the bowels of the dashboard then. 8)
