had a problem very similar with my VX220.

Bought an old starter and contact kit to refurb it and that all went easy enough, then came the hard bit...

Thank you for your butchered spanner, candles and your write up was essential.

All in all took about 5 hours to swap the starters over but now the elan starts a beauty. I haven't taken my old one to bits yet but will do soon to see how bad the contacts are. I'm glad i replaced the contatcs in the one i put in the car coz they were pretty worn too. I DON'T want to have to get to the starter again! EVER!

I got the starter contacts off ebay £6.95 delivered. i [url=mailto:nippon@deepvault.com?subject=Ebay%20enquiry]emailed[/url] them to see if they had any for our starter Model Number: 8944410871 Serial Number: 128000-4571 and they said to use the one in the link. One of the contacts is a different shape to the one fitted in my starter but it makes contact. They have got a website which shows you how to change over the contacts

No worries, Jay. Yeah it was pretty easy. The most difficult thing is trying to keep the contacts straight when you tighten the nuts. It's also worth buying the kit instead of just the contacts (£4.50) since I broke one of the old insulators getting the old contact off and one of the new ones doing the new nut up. (if you use an open ended spanner you shouldn't have that problem ) Gonna get me another kit soon to repair my old starter

What does the voltmeter say when you turn on the ignition? Sounds like it could be a dead battery.

and it crannked once then went back to clicking .
things to note ar when cranking the oil light and the handbrake light on the dash go out as the starter clicks . the boost gauge reads max boost
i am going to check the connections on the starter and the earths to the same.cz think its a wiring issue. i take it there is no relay on the starter ?

addict, make sure you`ve replaced the earth wire correctly whilst doing the head work

Also, are you certain the battery was charged? When you turn the key the voltmeter will give you a good idea.

where will i find the wire . i have a small wire from the left hand side to connect .
i did try using a booster cable direct from the earth side of the battey direct to the engine as a temp path 4 earth . result no change. new battery fully charged

monty was correct twa earth straps missing car now turns over but not starting.

Are you getting fuel to the engine? Has the inertia switch tripped?
