Thanks for the quick replies and kind offers of help. I'm still waiting for the dealer to get back to me on a few questions but if it looks good will probably take up the offer to check it out for me.

Have you seen the BRG with 8000 for £14999. Check out how the boot spoiler lines up with everything else. Its near perfect. What do you have to do to get it to line up like that? Ive had a go at tightening and undoing the 4 nuts under the lid but no change. Its got to be worth every penny, a Jacko. M&A

it depends on which boot set up you have...

I'll guess you have the stops that wear a nice divet into the Gel...

but it's just a case of test and adjust...

What do you adjust. The 4 nuts under the spoiler? Or the back nuts at the hinges? A&M

It's not a simple as it sounds...

The whole back end is adjustable... bumper.lights, numberplate plinth, boot and spoiler

So if you adjust one.... it'll put another dimension out... hence the test and adjust

It looks like the boys at Lotus had a good day when they put the BRG together. I guessed you could move everything. I don't think its a job for me. Have you ever adjusted yours Geoff, Specky? Are yours anything like the BRG? I don't think Ive seen one line up that good. A&M

I could sell you some dark specs and advise you to squint - It's a hell of a lot easier than getting the gaps perfect (although as Specks says, it is straightforward enough, but very time consuming)

At first clance the BRG back end is OK, but the light pods have slipped slightly over the years and the bonnet alignment could do with tweaking if you want to be picky...

But at the end of the day it's a hand built car

I couldn't possibly comment, since I have read, and understood the directive that: "Discussion of prices of Elans advertised for sale on LEC is prohibited in open forum, private discussion is perfectly acceptable. A separate area for discussion of prices of Elans not advertised on LEC and market value generally is available in the 'Elan Buying Help section' of the 'For Sale' area."

I would, however, say that a 14 year old car with only 8,000 miles would not be top of my list, whatever the price.

I don't think M&A's comments were about price. More so about the near perfection of the car (especially the boot spoiler!) and that fact that's its got only 8K on it regardless of the price. By the way, I bought a 15 year old Elan with 1,700 miles on it. Best Elan on the planet and the best car I've ever bought. Depends on how its been maintained over those years.

Oh yea, I noticed that even though you started your post with "I couldn't possibly comment..........." I see that you did - "I would, however, say that a 14 year old car............". I'm thrilled to see that I'm not the only one who occassionally contradicts themselves around here God knows I need some company.

Hi everyone, I'm new here (there's an introduction on the newbies page).

I was just wondering if anyone had any information on the Medina Green Elan (no. 197) that's advertised on Pistonheads:

I know there's no history and a slight tear in the roof but it seems worth a look (I just want to save a lot of timewasting if there's any prior knowledge here)

Thats an identical car to mine! All of the S2s have a limited edition number, as the seller to give you the number and post it on here and you may get lucky if it is on the registry.

EDIT: Doh as you say its 197 i really should read slower .. mine was 165 maybe so maybe they did all the medina greens with blue interiors at the same time...

Doesn't look Medina Green in the pics, looks like Aqua Blue to me.

Could be a good car, could have a history, difficult to tell with the basic info given.

An Hpi check combined with a full check over of the car should reveal which it is

I'm a little worried about the "small tear" in the hood - the guy's a trader and says he's had it stitched-up but is this really anything more patter?
Will it last?
Are there coachmakers that can help? (and if so, how much?).

Hmmm.... it doesn't say he's a dealer on Pistonheads, certainly worth reporting that, as they take a dim view of traders saying they're private sellers.

Well, Somerset is not the smallest county in England, but i wouldn't think it could be any more than an hour from me (as I can get to the far corners of the county in that sort of time), and am just starting a fortnight off work..........

....so if it is a serious enquiry, and you've got as much as you can from the telephone/e-mail, and still fancy a viewing, give me a shout (I can either go with you, or on your behalf to save you a trip).

But be aware - (as anyone[everyone] on here knows, I will buy ANY condition elan with rose-tinted glasses to keep them from being broken up as spares, so what I consider to be an 'acceptable' fault, others may not want to live with - but I will offer an honest oppinion for you to make your own mind up).

There seems to be a number of Elan's for sale at the moment with relatively low mileages (60 - 70k ), but no service history availiable or means of contacting previous owners.
My suspicious mind is wondering if these have been high mileage cars taken by dealers as part exchange, and spruced up, and clocked for resale.
Anyone interested in buying such a car should try all means to verify the mileage ( MOT's , DVLA etc ) before parting with any cash.
