Has any one got this to work yet?

I tried tonight with just the ignition on and then with the engine running no joy, I am going to check the lead and laptop on Sunday on a turbo car so will see if it is just a N/A thing or not.
Have both elan scan and the NA program so will see.
The lead is serial and as there is only one com port (com1) then there is no way this can be wrong.

may have to delete the ini file but will give it another go in the morning????????????

As another thought is it posible to amend elanscan to get rid of things like boost? and are the gear ratio's correct as the final drive is different on the N/A or can you just edit the ini file?

Even if you just have 1 COM port, it can still be assigned as com1, com2, etc.
Dunno if your laptop has the option, but check the bios setup (F2@boot, well, probably) and assign COM as COM 1
Check re-check and check the re-check...
If you always do what you always did, you always get what you always got

ElanScan WON'T work on an NA. The NormScan program merely cycles around all possible command word IDs until it gets some chatter back. Once we know the command word, the data will have to be saved and deciphered, but at least we have the Rosetta stone from Alan's work on the turbo decryption!

Bob, thanks for the e-mail - I've just changed ISPs and can't send e-mails just yet! Your link is useful as the Isuzu is listed as 0x51, the Elan turbo is 0x56 and 0x52, 0x59, 0x5A and 0x5B are missing before we get to 1990 cars. My guessing it's one of those. Your point about the need for a 10k resistor is interesting (but I don't see why the turbo ECU is that different to the NA ECU) but it would be useful if you could measure the voltage on pin G of the ALDL connector with respect to pin A - it should be ~5V with the ignition on.

Geoff my N/A is a little while off running again, but I do have a spare new ECU and Memcal just in case... so if you or ESM need to play with out breaking the squiggly wiggly boxes just ask...

Geoff
I did manage to get something to show up using WinALDL all be it not very useful
I do get some raw data
raw.jpg

Unsure what it all means but is does show I supose that the connection is there it is just getting the software to see the data.
As for measuring the voltage if I can find my meter I will but I have not seen it in a while may be time to buy a new one

I have a spare ECM and I did open it up to take a look and it would appear that is totally different than the turbo one
Here a pic of the lay out.

It looks totally different than the turbo ecm............

Bob, do not despair! The turbo ECU uses surface mount passive components rather than the though hole components in yours. This is primarily to reduce production costs as automatic pick-and-place machines can populate a board in a fraction of the time it takes to load through hole devices. The layout is different (as it must be) but 99% was probably done with an automatic layout and routing package, so I'm not surprised to see such large differences.

Geoff,

I was not so concerned about the resistors and capacitors being "through hole" but it is just that some of the ic's are different. What is the number on the turbo box if the N/A is a 1227165?

The markings may well change due to different suppliers, minor packaging or specification changes but they don't affect form, fit or function. At the end of the day they are (or used to be) pretty common components and for example all the component listings have 16034980 listed for the processor whereas yours is marked 16159860?? (it must be the processor as it's right next to the crystal).

Geoff

Not sure if it helps but I did find these ALDL Definition files for the 1227165

These appear to be for 305/350 cu inch Chevy small block engines with Tuned Port Fuel Injection (TPI) -- I'd suspect for the Camaro/Firebird

That may be so but they seem to use the same 1227156 ECM all be it with a different MEMCAL no doubt
