Lotus Elan database and VIN Decipher

Postby surfboardfiller » Fri 26.06.2009, 10:47

Can anyone write a decent but very simple database for the SE register. I'm using XL and it is soo bad! It would be good to have an automatic VIN decipher which fills out certain fields too. :-D A bit like the moon on a stick but I thought I should ask....

WARNING!! :poke:

i'm almost finished my online lotus (elan) register/website...
VIN, engine Nr, type, special editions and many more, upload of pictures!

uniqueness of the project is that the owner's can maintain several details of their car like 'previous owners', 'mileages' AND every owner decide what details will be listed or not. We also make relations of previous owners, so if you add a car and the car is already in the database we will provide u all the information.

(btw : text is not done, and need corrections)

I don't want you and gazza and Geoff (S2 database) are feeling passed ...

I just want to make a good website/registry four us all Lotus drivers.

Because i'm maniacaly collecting special edition Lotusses (info, images and the numbers) found over the internet ... it would be interesting to share all that information.

Thats all well and good but I have a problem sharing such information that is open to all not just Lotus owners, I do not have a problem with a LEC register of Elans or a register of all Lotus cars but not one that is open on the internet. Plus you have to be careful as you could be getting into the realms of data protection legislation.

It doesn't bother me, it would be good to see photos of lots of Lotus' all together. SE Database is comprehensive but not public, so it's a different flavour.

If it's held in Belgium then Data Protection may or may not be an issue (I don't know their legislation), but host it in Luxemburg and you can get away with murder!

This is why Ebay and PayPal are hosted there - total confidentiallity and imposible to force them to tell you anything (from a law enforcememt point of view), however, a reasonable request usually meets with a reasonable reply - just dont demand!

If it were hosted in UK, then Data Protection Act wouldn't come into it if it were operated by a private individual, only if it were a business or public body.

That said, I wouldn't be entering anything which i wouldn't want in the public domain (so I won't be playing, sorry :? )

Regarding data protection ... users can decide what information goes online or not.
There are more registry websites from other exotic cars that put full details online (numberplate, address, full names)

And sure we will take care of the privacy of users details. Thats the reason we build in the option to decide what info you want to share.
Like share to all, share to Elan owners only, share to Lotus owners only ... you can keep previouw owners, licenceplates and mileages hidden also.

If people has specific wishes, ideas or details, at this moment we can use all the info.
We can still change because we are still programming at the moment...

Sorry if i sounded like I was having a pop at your database - that was not the intention at all.

It is a great idea, and I'm sure that the data will be handled sensitively.....

...but in my current work environment there are many details that I wouldn't want to become public knowledge - after all, James Bond never gave out his address
