I know, you're all going to think I'm mad.
Having just crippled myself finantially I'm allready thinking about the next upgrade and
I havn't finished the last one yet!
The situation is quite simple (like me). The car needs another gear for motorway / dual
carriage cruising.
Is there an alternative gear box available with 6 gears ? or a different crown
wheel and pinion that would do the trick? First gear is probably too low anyway.
The only other alternative is taller tyres with the inherent problems that would bring.
Any thoughts, suggestions or am I just looking for the impossible?
Regards
Jim

Hi Bob,
Even If I had £9k that my wife didn't know about this wouldn't be an option
for me. I'm a dyed in the wool conventional gear change man. I have only used
the sequential on my BM a couple of times and almost caused havoc going
down instead of up
Thanks for the suggestion.
Regards
Jim

I know what you mean, Jim. It is sometimes nice to cruise at 70 with the engine barely above 2000rpm.
Be careful what you wish for.
The Elan seems to be geared to provide boost in 5th from about 60-70 mph almost instantly when you press the accelerator. It wouldn't do this in a higher gear so you may find yourself changing down frequently.

Maybe instead of an alternative gearbox you could try an alternative car? Our Jeep does 70 mph just under 2000 rpm I think. And then hits redline at 4500 rpm, what a machine.
