Aha, so it doesn't. Looks like the ad has expired now. I'll take some photos tomorrow or later today if it stops hammering it down...

I am just starting to look at getting myself one of these beauties.

Does anyone know about this car?

I can tell you it hasn't got front foglamps or ABS, and thus I'd be very wary about the seller.

Caroline,
I spoke to him about a month ago about the car and he said it was in great condition so I went to have a look through the window (I took a 40 mile detour on a sunday afternoon to have a look) and was dissapointed by it. Its obviously had some paint done poorly on the front and the hood didn't look great and he hadn't put it right at the front as he had agreed too. suggest you look at some others first because i saw some that were better than that for less money.

Cheers for this, As I am passing anyhow I think I will take a look, but only so I know what I am not looking for. I will make sure I pay attention to the areas you have pointed out so that I will be able to see the difference in the next cars I look for.

Ok being new to this. What does having no front foglamps and ABS mean. Is is a S1 old car?

To be honest I have been trying to find a list of the history of the versions of this car, with detailed changes. Can you point me in the right direction, so I can work out what I am looking for.

Caz,
Welcome to LEC. No Elan was ever fitted with front foglamps as original equipment, nor was any Elan ever fitted with ABS (Anti Lock brakes). Any one who says they were doesn't know what they are talking about and does not know much about these cars.

There are 3 basic models of Elan sold into the UK market as follows:

NA - Very rare as only 140 or so were made. NA means Normally Aspirated and that means no turbo, that means these cars don't accelerate as quickly as other Elans but still go round corners well, they are perhaps the least desirable Elan because of this but have their merits and their supporters (I have one as does Clemo). If original easily distinguished by black plastic wing mirror casings, power steering was an option on these. 15" wheels as standard. Various interior options. When new these were the bargain basement Elans but are still a great car and not that much slower than the SE and S2 if well sorted.

SE - The most numerous type of Elan (sometimes called an S1 but properly an SE). SE stands for Special Equipment and these are all turbocharged. About 3500 made between 1989 and 1991? 30BHP more than the NA and go very well indeed in a straight line and round corners. Wing mirror casings are painted the same colour as the body as standard, power steering was standard, various interior trim options with 3 tone leather (red or yellow stripes on the seats and door panels) the most common. 15" wheels as standard.

S2 - 800 made 1994-1995. All numbered individually, all turbocharged have catalytic convertors to comply with legislation and have slightly less power than an SE as standard. These were made after Bugatti bought Lotus and inherited a production line and 800 spare engines and gearboxes, a quick income generation scheme for Lotus at the time. Many detail changes over the SE, Single colour leather trim (sometimes with contrasting piping on the seats) centre console between seats does not have a lidded storage box. 16" 5 spoke wheels as standard (also now fitted to many earlier cars), in my experience the S2 is a tauter handling, firmer riding car than an NA or SE as the suspension was stiffened slightly and the steering has a bit more feel. As these are the newest Elans they tend to command a slightly higher price. But a well looked after SE would be a better bet than a dog of an S2.

Hope that helps.

I hesitate to make the recommendation, but you have Monty and Dico on your doorstep.

Two nicer blokes you could not wish to meet, and they know Elans inside out. However my hesitation is because you seem to be female and may be attractive and unattached. This may result in a couple of slavering chancers turning up at your door and it'll take you ages to get rid of the smell of curry, beer and Brut.

John.

Has anyone any more details on this car? if anyone has taken it out and had a drive in it, opinions on that would be really useful.
I'm prob going to look at it this weekend and it'll be the first elan I'm looking at so any further info would be great.
I did a search on dvla on that plate - and it doesn't appear to be the correct one for that car.

Seats ??????
Hi All .... Just looking at this nice S2 Blue Elan on auto trader .... Are those the correct seats fitted for this late S2 model ???
(As they seem to be very similar to the ones as fitted in the earlier SE)... Were they upgraded in the s2 ???

Many Thanks
Songbird :0)

Its been advertised in the Club Lotus magazine for a few months. It looks a nice one. I know what you mean about the seats. I think they are stock. The advert says 749 but the photo says 745 Gazza might have it on the list. M&A

Chris I took it out for a drive and it felt quite good and solid to drive. He was right about the paint work on the front. It had been jacked on the do not jack point. They had tried to stick some of the interior back together badly. But overall, I am looking for a everyday car to drive, and for the price it is alright.

Obvisouly I am not an expert on these cars, but from what I read of the buying guide it was not that bad. I would expect him to drop the price to the £3k mark if I wanted to buy it. This is still an option for me, but just not so sure at the moment.

Has anyone else been to see it?

It is a personal plate, but the paperwork stands up to the actually plate and there is a lot of history.

The seats are the standard half leather seats. Most S2s have leather seats - they were a cost option when the car was produced.

If you're interested in an Azure Blue S2, Paul Matty has a similar car - a 65K S2 in Azure Blue (with leather) for £8950, and Sportomotive have a 77,000 mile Azure S2 (again, with leather) for £7995.
Serial Elan owner: 2002 - 2012. I may yet buy another one...
