Sorry to hear about your situation, I have been struggling myself lately, I'm sure things will turn around for you soon.

Any CEL codes? Checked base timing? Have you had the injectors checked?

Perhaps for a few cans you could persuade Neil or Graham to take a look see if they have any ideas?

Oi! Get a grip. What d'you think we're here for if not to help other Elan owners?

I solved my year-long occasional misfire by changing the HES at a mighty cost of about £18. Have you had yours done? As a possible clue to diagnosis, I noticed that my static timing marks were a bit wavery on the strobe before I changed it and rock-solid legible after I changed it. While I had the misfire, it didn't throw up a fault code either.

If you post up a bit more about when the misfire occurs, how bad it is and if your car is standard or modified, I'm sure you'll get more suggestions for possible alternative causes. Even the wrong plug gap can give a misfire on acceleration (31 thou is correct). If you don't have a strobe to check the timing, I'm sure somebody must live near Derby, and it only takes 15 mins to set (most of which is jacking the car up and removing and replacing the wheel so that you can see the timing marks properly).

I should have a brand new original style one available anytime now, which would mean you dont have to hack your loom to fit the newer style HES. (unless yours has been changed over already)

Ive ordered a brand new CAS which comes with the original type HES, but ive already changed my loom to run with the new HES i fitted a few months ago so i will have to swap the HESs over... hence the orginal (but new) HES will be up for grabs.

PM me if your interested
