Cat-on-skates favicon on URL bar?

Postby tigerdog » Mon 27.07.2009, 17:56

Any chance of changing the web page header to include a favicon. just a 16x16 file but I'd much rather see a cat-on-skates instead of the generic page icon my browser substitutes. Code (from my company web site) looks like this
Code: Select all
   <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

Three icon candidates; includes the one in the initial post. Thanks to Geoff for the originals.

Great suggestion, sorted.

I think Doug had a pop at it, but something went wrong along the way.

I have an Icon saying LEC in my bookmarks, just an Internet Explorer Icon in the Browser Bar and on the Tab for the page. This is using IE8. Is the Favicon in place yet?

IE is always such a pain in the arse. "standards are there to be broken"

try (nabbed from someone's page on dealing with IE):
- Add the page to your favorites. If you already have the page in your favorites folder, remove it and add it again.
- Delete your temporary internet files. If the folder with temporary files has reached its maximum, the favicon may not be used.

if it still doesn't work then I'll probably look in to it at some point.

Thank you! Working here, but I'm using Firefox not IE. It showed up as soon as I reached the site. When I clicked my shortcut, FF automagically updated the shortcut icon with the favicon.

Thanks Al. Catching up after a weekend away, I didn't even need to ask :D .

Interestingly though LEC forum index has come up with a LEC logo in my favourites for as long as I can remember anyway?

Good team effort! And anyone still using IE deserves not to have it.

It's working for me now on IE8, it looks good alongside my custom iGoogle page. Anyone who thinks IE is bad never had to work with Lynx - those were the days!

Just noticed it in mine! Pretty cool. Is there any way to make it a little better resolution? Other logos tend to look clearer. If you didn't know exactly what the Cat-on-skates logo is, you'd probably not recognize it. On the other hand, I suppose everybody who'll see it does know.

I tried 3 different versions but the cat-on-skates is a lot of detail to fit into a 16x16 matrix. Maybe someone who's more graphically inclined can work some magic with 32-bit colour palettes or something.

lynx is cool, but w3m was cooler - it could display images if you were in an xterm :)

Actually, favicons can be 32x32 pixels in size, and either 8-bit or 24-bit in color depth.

Learn something new every day! Geoff, you might send that 32x32 graphic again (darned delete key!) Better yet, if anyone has a larger 24-bit colour version of the cat-on-skates, I'll be glad to work on making it small and icon-ish.

New candidate icons

Postby tigerdog » Sat 15.08.2009, 20:09

Here are a couple of square icons that are (I think) a little more legible. Use them if you can. :)

They look good, Doug. Sort of clearer. What did you do?

Stole a larger 300x300 cat-on-skates and reduced the size using GIMP/Linux, then saved as JPEG at "100%" image quality. Hope they work!

It's not working right in Firefox - keeps going all transparent and generally f-ed up.
