The garage has reset the ECU and it is the same...He has told me to go to Noble motor sport in Chesterfield as they can rolling road it and boost it up and check what it is. He said he has used them in the past and they are spot on???

Is the coil pack easy to replace?

two coils bolted on to a base plate...

They take 15 mins to remove both coils from the base plate and start the car back up.

you don't have to drain down the coolant, just upbolt the back of the expansion tank and push the bottle out the way.

Could you get to the Malvern show?

I'd borrow some coils from some one localish and see if it cures the problem. (Plea for help)

If the coils are OEM, they will eventually need replacing, but they are expensive, especially in this country.

Tough call...

There are two coils.

Most people now use atlanticspeed and get some blaster coils...

I second Specky - check plugs, wires and coils. It's difficult to assess the quality of these components by eye. "Fine when cold" means "fine when boost is restricted" because the Elan will not reach full boost until it reaches operating temp. The mixture also leans out as it warms. These things combine to make it more difficult for the spark to jump the plug gap. If there's an easier place for the arc to jump, it will. Making matters worse, the Elan has a waste-spark system; plugs fire (and misfire) in pairs, making a misfire situation feel very bad indeed. I found Smaug would misfire under boost if the plugs were mis-gapped; a bad coil and plug wire practically put the car out of business.

Thanks Tiger, We have replaced the plugs....When the car is warm and on the road under load it splutters but not when idling or revving at a stand still.

The plugs after a run are all the same colour, What ever is breaking down is not getting any worse at the moment...If the coil pack went would it just "go" or would it be an intermitant fault (under boost).

Andy P had suggested it could be the fuel rail...Any other suggestions on this??

When i get the car back on Monday i think i will Video exactly what is happening from start to finnish and post it here, I am sure someone will have had this problem before and a video will show what is happening.

When the coils go, it's an intermittent fault that gets worse.

AndyP could be correct about the fuel rail, but it's a less likely fault. (or it could be the pump)

You've got to take a pragmatic approach before delving a little deeper.

In reality it could be anything.

I've got a set of stock used coils you can try - they were working perfectly when I swopped them following the MSN coilpack group buy.

I was going to put them on fleabay sometime - drop us a PM if you want them.

If they are no use to you/when you are finished with them, put them on ebay and send us whatever you get.

Cheers mate...thought i had found the problem tonight but it is the same..

The air intake from the turbo was loose at the air filter side and the plastic pipe that press fits into the air box had distorted allowing air through, I sorted this and clamped the pipe up tight but the same...BOOO hoooo

Will keep you informed of my plight.

Don't mess around with anything else until you have tried replacing the coil packs.

I would put money on at least one pair being on it's way out, so the other won't be far behind.

If you upset anything else there is every chance that by the time you've sorted this problem you'll have created another.

PS you ought to update your profile with your location as only this thread says where you're from, and if you post for help in any others people won't remember and will just keep asking (unless you've got a particular reason for keeping it a secret)!
