Gearstick

Postby ashm » Mon 05.10.2009, 19:58

Since I just ordered the last gearshift controller assembly from Lotus (sorry!), do we think there'd be any interest in a short-shift replacement? I've been thinking of developing one once some of my current projects are out of the way.

I thought we cleared the last ones out months ago?

Dave's shortshift is brilliant, total transforms the car. So if i was you i would safe yourself some time and buy one of his.

Enright: it'd be a new gearstick assembly, not the mechanism at the transmission end of the cables. Main objectives would be easier adjustment and lower loads on the cables.

Gazza: There was 1 left on the sale list on Monday... it's currently on its way to B&C with my name on it.
Dave's solution is really neat and I might well get one, but it also requires stronger cables and increases the loads on the gearstick mechanism. The gearsticks won't last for ever, and there are now no more available from Lotus. I just wondered if it'd be useful to come up with a replacement version, I like to have projects to tinker with...

Adam,

you need stronger/better cables without the shortshifter fitted

Monty: Doubtless! I've no idea what condition mine are in but I should probably start saving if the rest of the car is anything to go by!

I've been running Dave's short shift with my original cables for the last 8K miles....granted I do have some ty wraps in the glove box and a set of AB cables in the spares box but the originals seem to be holding up well.....famous last words!

As an added incentive, the short shift kit I made for my car (gear stick and bell lever) works a treat and didn't add to the weight of moving the lever. It was alittle bit of a pain as the gearcable holes need to be relocated further down meaning I had to drill out the spot welds and rewelded a new face onto the gear lever mount. It does work very well though but again it's alot of work to get right. Alsogetting the whole assembly to fit in the hole in the backbone was it's own lesson in alternative thinking.

To be clear, my short shif modification was to the gear lever side. Not the transmission side as everyone else.

Oh, hang on, I'd just want the standard replacement gearstick assembly then to go with the AB shortshift. Is that what you meant :?:

Well, possibly
I'm thinking of an adjustable version, with a mechanism for switching between standard and short throw settings.
However, I doubt I'd be in a position to have a finished item available before Spring, since I'll be out of the country most of the time between now and then...

Thanks for the clarification. I'll check the condition of my existing when I change the cables but its always good to have a spare, so I will be still interested in future.

Now that xmas is over and the cash flow is slowly improving, I keep seeing lots of folk mentioning Dave's short shift. I was wondering what one of these is and whether it's worth getting one?
If I did go for one what else would I need to buy and are they easy to fit or would there be some one who would be able to help me fit it?

Cheers,

Tom :D

Tom, stop wondering and fit one now. Especially when combined with AB cables, it's like getting a new car. When I recently drove an unmodified Elan, I could not believe how vague - rotten, really - the stock setup is by comparison.

I've got a box of parts to install - those two items included. Just waiting for some warmth in the air!

Well its pay day in 2 weeks. Looks like I shall invest and make this my first mod on the car.
Then try and find someone to spray the bonnet swiftly followed by the boot as the paint is a bit flat.

cheers,
