There's already a fantastic roll hoop option for the Elan, courtesy of one of our resident auto geniuses... see here and here.

If you're going for roll hoops/bar then it's either for looks or safety. Either way, this set stomps all over anything else I've seen, I'll definitely be going for it when I can afford to.

I don't think any of the MX5 hoops are functional and provide any protection in the event of turning the car over, if it's the look you're after then no problem but if I was to go to the trouble of fitting them then I'd want something that worked. Simon's hoops are the best, but if you don't want to run to that then LGMs hoops are the next best option and I happen to have a set no longer fitted to my car (have Simon's now) which I would consider selling (complete with wind deflector and all fittings).

Wasn't really that worried about rolling the car, Ive spun it at 70mph before and it glued itself to the ground upright!!! Was more thinking of trying to clear some of the draft from the wind away from my ears oh and looks of course!!!

I bought a used chrome MX5 roll bar for $75, the same as you show, with the intention of fitting it to my Elan. It would require cutting as the hinged roof caps sit right where the roll bar would go. Decided that it wasnt worth the effort and sold it for $125 . PS: The MX5 boys call this type of bar the 'labotomy bar' as it offers zero protection.

I've spun mine at 70 but it was on track where I'm assuming Blue Bullet had his experience Spinning won't necessarily cause the car to roll either which is worth bearing in mind unless of course you spin off into soft ground or a gravel trap. Frankly I think roll hoops spoil the look of the Elan. This didn't stop me from getting some of Mr Carriers fitted after seeing what had happened to other people who relied on their screen surround for their protection. As you know with the deck and the fairings it at least makes it look very acceptable. For me and my passenger the additional weight gain is worth it.

I would not fit roll hoops in any shape or form that were not going to offer any protection in the event of the car flipping.

Me too Chris. Those MX-5 owners that have the heavily chromed, bling roll bars fitted to their cars have them for out and out pose value. They offer absolutely NO protection whatsoever.

Spun my Elan being stupid Racing a souped up TVR when i first bought it not realizing eventually it was going to bite back!
Been Extra careful ever since after all it would of been 9 grand at the time down the drain if I wasn't so lucky!

Yeah, those bling hoops are more of a danger, if you do flip your Elan it`s possible they`ll be inbedded in your skull. MikeI flipped his Elan and even the top part of the seat bent forward and poor mike had to have skin graft to his skull.

The only way to go are Simon's structural roll hoop package or LGM's hoops. Wish I'd bought Ailwyn's off him when I had the chance

If you'd have clipped a kerb, you may well have flipped the car.
A blow-out caused exactly that to happen to G UK's S2 in February this year, so you don't need to be driving like a nutter either.
Graham was lucky. He suffered a few cuts & bruises. If he had been 2" taller, it may have been another story.

You see this is what happens when you let a trainee pilot loose in an Elan - the muppet tries to barrel-roll it and when that fails he stops it with his head!

Pictures of the dead car are on P2, but bear in mind that the Elan met the safety specifications for it's time, which were that the windscreen frame should be able to take the weight of the car resting on it. Unfortunately crashes generally don't involve cars "gently resting" that way up, and as a result Graham will be aiming to get something a little more substantial than a basic wind-blocker on his next Elan ASAP.

Being an elan owner, he's obviously an intelligent guy and will know the risks
