Howdi - Imminent New Owner

Postby HUEANDCRY71 » Fri 13.11.2009, 18:06

Hi all,

I am currently in negotiations to buy a 1991 Elan SE in yellow, due to seller unavailabilty i am unable to test drive it until next weekend.

I have owned a number of Elises and Exiges over the years and i cant wait to have another Lotus variant especially one with reasonable insurance costs, i was paying over £1k for the Exige and have been quoted £190 for the Elan.

This is probably the most asked question so please bear with me,(it certainly is on Pistonheads where i usually frequent), is there anything i need to be aware of before purchasing??

Also, in terms of social meetings and gatherings etc, what is there around the North West area, i will explore the site at some stage this weekend and will probably answer my own questions but any advice, tips, hints etc would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.
My 91 Elan in BRG is my 5th Lotus after previously owning a 111S,111R,Sport Racer and an NA Exige.

Welcome to LEC, I hope your Elan purchase goes through. As a starter on what to look for see Here for a buyers guide, there's plenty of other info in that part of the forum as well so have a browse. There aee a few from the North West around here, if you put your location in your profile then people will know where you are.

Hi and welcome.
Not many (infact zero :D ) LEC social events in the North West, however Norlog is a decent site for Lotus enthusiasts. Mainly Elise's and Exiges but with the odd Elan too-

Possibly you have already heard of it or a member already?
Where exactly in the North West are you?

Im in Liverpool, found another Elan on Pistonheads tonight (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1330636.htm) that im going to look at in Manchester at the weekend so hopefully may have one sooner.

Is there anybody on here around this area that does inspections as i would feel more confident with a "trained eye" looking at any purchase before i buy it??

With regards to NORLOC yes i have been on there a few times and met some people off there at Aintree last year when i had my Exige.

Thanks for the responses.

The chap who owns the car is 15 minutes from the airport, it would be fantatsic for me if you was free on Sunday.

I have tentatively arranged to meet around mid day but will firm up a time with the seller to suit you. Please let me know what time you are available.

I woud say a "good" thing...
From description it looks like a lot of sensible upgrades have allready been done.. saving you time and money.... Cam belt changed is also a big bonus ... and of course, it is a LEC members car... Def worth a look.

Excellent, the only thing that concerns me at the moment is the recent "dead engine" posts although it looks like it was sorted.

Been and had a look and really liked it, i had a drive of it as well and found it great to drive.

Not being a mechanic there wasnt too much i could look at or look for but it drove fine, made the right noises and generally seemed well looked after and cared for.

I have made an offer and will wait and see.

I am now officially the proud owner of a 1991 BRG SE Turbo.

Big thanks to Clive AKA Hinch for looking after it so well and for putting up with my daft questions. Hopefully i will have some trouble free driving to look forward to!!

A few things that i would like to look at doing straight away (i would appreciate a nudge in the right direction) are ;

Get out for a ride with some of you lot.
Respray of the bumper to get rid of a few pesky stonechips.
New carpets for the interior
Sort out the "loose" gear stick.
Refurb of the seats (possibly new ones)
Sort out the wobbly passenger mirror (glass part of it)
New stereo and speakers

Any advice would be most welcome.
