I'm planning a ignition upgrade to a COP CDI system, and as I go along I will post all my moments of insanity, just incase someone is stupid enough to do the same thing.
I'm in the planning stages at the moment, but the basics are:
Motec CDI four channel (#41011) ignition module ($814);
Weapon X Performance Coils (approx $60USD);
Motec M400 ECU ($2319); and
Motec loom and sensor kit for turbo cars (inc a 3 bar MAP sensor) ($343)
The mod will be done at the same time as the Motec ECU (M400) upgrade, to take advantage of the ignition trigger signals from the ECU.
The ignition module (below) will allow a true sequential ignition to be used, with the benefits of being completely synchronised with the ECU, and controlled by it.
This will completely replace the Elan ignition - so no more coil issues.
I’m intending to do it in such a way that the OEM equipment can be reinstalled at any time, without issues, damage or evidence (not really sure why, as I intend to keep her forever, but you never know – an immaculate S4S my just come up).
It doesnt appear to be as difficult as it sounds, as Motec provides excellent online support and documentation, and the local dealer is an excellent bloke, keen to see what can be done - with affordable dyno time (est 3-5 hours will be needed).
Attached are the wiring diagrams, which are pretty idiot proof (mind you I can be a pretty big idiot), so you can see where I am headed.
The only information I have been unable to source so far is the pin outs of the CAS. There being no crank positioning sensor, everything has to come from the CAS.
There are 3 wires on the hall effects sensor, and 2 on the magnetic sensor which I'm 99% sure is only for timing data as its connected directly to the coil pack.
So, can anyone tell me what the CAS pin outs are? What signals do they actually provide, and a CRO trace if you have one.
Hall Effect Sensor
Red is +12V supply, Yellow is to the UCU and black is the earth.
Timing sensor
White/red & White - both straight to the coil pack - presumably one to fire each coil.
So guessing here:
The Yellow wire from the hall effect sensor to the ecu is the referance signal and provides injection timing information (it seems like its non-sequential = all injectors fire on each pulse)
White/Red fires spark to cylinders 2 & 4
White fires spark to cylinders 1 & 3.
