GeoffSmith: the place where the transducer is I will find, what I want to know is if it's possible with an adapter to place the sender for the oil temperature near the transducer? Monty did it with a hose adaptor, by the oil cooler but if it's possible by the transducer, it seems easy and less expensive! What do you think?

valimar wrote:Hi all,
I just bought A VDO oil temp. gauge/sender. The sender Thread is M14x1.5 and I am thinking to mount it in place of the oil drain plug. I know it's a vulnerable place but I don't do much off road driving
Anyway I have a question: Maybe it seems a dumb question but would it not be possible to install the sender (with an adaptor) where the oil pressure transducer is mounted? I pressume in the back side of the engine.
I appreciate your opinion!
Cheers
I was going to fit the sensor to the sump plug, infact i bought the adaptor but realised by the time the sensor was fitted it would be to low and wouldn`t last a minute on my car since it is lowered.
The best place is to fit as i have and thats the feed going to the oil cooler (not the return)
I`m going to eventually change my gauge to a digital type as the oil temp is hardly showing on my gauge and the digital type will be easyer to read

Monty, I respect your opinion but as you know, oil circulates through the sump and if you get familiar with the temperature (in the sump lower) you read, doesn't make much difference!
Anyway I am going to place my question in another forum because nobody yet answered my question

There`s very few members who have fitted an oil temp gauge so you may struggle for an answer.
But since getting to the transducer is difficult IMHO i wouldn`t even try to fit the sender there
There is an adaptor plate you can buy which fits between the oil filter and engine which can hold the oil sensor but it`s getting the correct one to fit our cars

The idea of cutting the hose, by the oil cooler, doesn’t appeal to me! I prefer to take a look, by the oil filter, to see what I can do…
In the past I had quite a few lancia’s and alfa romeo’s and if there was no oil temp gauge installed, there was at least a special place to install one, mostly by the oil filter. Strange that Izuzu didn’t provide for it.

Interestingly, Isuzu fitted a remote oil filter. The engine had only an adapter plate with hoses to a remote filter mount. This would be an ideal place for a temp sensor and would also make oil changes easier. Unfortunately, Lotus went for light weight and skinned forearms.

FYI the Elan uses the same filter as a 88-95 Honda civic. This means that the oil filter relocation adapters for said car will fit ours and cosidering the popularity of the civic as a tuner car parts should be easy to come by. As far as temp sensor location the filter area may be a bad idea with one exception. The oil preassure sensor. This is a 1/8 NPT treaded fitting perhaps a T fitting here may work.
Adding an adapter to futher extend the oil filter will be problematic at best with the already tight space it's in. The oil cooler is a good idea so long as it's on the inlet/high pressure side. This is where I put the fan switch for my oil cooler fan in my 2nd oil cooler version.

I don't dispute your facts here, but my '91 Impulse had the oil filter mounted exactly where, and as it is in the Elan. In the Impulse, there was infinitely more room to reach it. In fact, I could reach it from above or below, and get it in and out with ease. A remote location would definitely be a plus in the Elan though.

This is the Sandwich plate i was talking about, but you need to confirm if it will fit the Elan.
