Parts required for LGM Turbo Upgrade???

Postby abmunro » Tue 12.01.2010, 07:44

I have been pulling parts together to do the upgrade.

Thoughts about upgrade...

To get 300+ BHP our turbo needs to be running 2.2 bar absolute pressure ( 1.2 bar gauge )

Are the standard engine internals up to this or do we need pistons and con rods?

To get the most do we need bigger intercooler and is it possible to fit one

What parts are needed to get up and running?

This is what I have...

Turbo with 2.5" Inlet & 12 psi wastegate
Jet hot coated downpipe
Oil lines etc

Cranbury Adapter plate

Haltech E6GMX ECU

RC Engineering 550cc injectors

Greddy Profec B series 2 Boost controller

3.5 Bar map sensor

Quaife ATB

New set spark leads

What else is required?

Upgraded clutch?

Walbro 255 litre fuel pump?

Fuel pressure regulator?

Hotter spark plugs?

Cheers

Tony

I would also like to know how you get 300bhp out of the little Isuzu lump? , there's a UK guy on youtube with a red Elan with 300hp , is he on this forum? think his name was Steve.

I personally would be happy with a reliable 250bhp,.... although if 300 was achievable with out too much expense

I would say a bigger inter cooler would be a must, my last car(not Elan) needed a massive inter-cooler to break 300bhp, the inter cooler alone made a big difference took my car from 270-304 , although were do you put a bigger inter-cooler?? , I also fitted a FSE rising rate fuel regulator which was set at 3.5 bar

If you achieve 300hp then your standard clutch wont last long especially with the short gearing of the elan and I personally wouldn't trust the internals with that hike in power

I am no expert on the Elan or any car but the ( What else is required list you wrote ) was all fitted to my last car

I hope you make it to 300bhp and document how to so I can follow :)

Good luck

Tony,

Your best bet is to go through the Sh4rk thread... Costas far exceeded 300bhp and from what I recall with little internal modification.... however uprated clutch is a must and Costas swore by uprated head gaskets.

I have been this route before with Sunny GTiR took from 227 BHP up to 345 BHP

I installed larger intercooler, I have emailed a UK firm to ask about making one.

I've read a lot of Costa's Shark thread and he says standard internals are good for 1.2 bar and no more.

If intercooler firm come back to me I will ask if they will do discount for group buy.

Dave M did a front mount intercooler on his T3 powered Elan. I have a custom spearco intercooler that is thicker than OEM (1.5 times thicker) but still fits in the OE local. I'm running 550cc injectors with a 3BAR MAP, MSD coils and of course my GT turbo upgrade at 16 PSI with stock internals. Have been for the past year+ with no issues. I do have a lightened flywheel with 6 puc clutch and updated preasure plate plus an LSD. Ekapol has been running a similar setup sans intercooler, clutch and diff upgrades. His car seems well also. My average BHP according to Dynolicious is 271BHP. .

Extra-sticky-but-don't-last-long tyres will probably be useful with that amount of power too. :-D

I already have a spare set of Alloys which I am going to put 888's on. ( for the track )

I have new S2 alloys shod with T1S's.. ( for road use )

abmunro, just out of curiosity, where did you come up with the 1.2bar gauge pressure needed for 300bhp?

Way I read it, he meant 2.2 bar (roughly 32PSI) is required but the stock gauge only reads to 1.2 bar

Incorrect. Gauge pressure is pressure as measured on a pressure gauge, which already accounts for atmospheric pressure. Absolute pressure is pressure including atmospheric pressure (usually 14.5psi = 1bar). Therefore, if you read 14.5psi on a boost gauge, that is 14.5psi on top of atmospheric. or 29psi absolute pressure.

I looked up the GT2560R on Garret website.

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobyga ... 6541_4.htm

It has a map see below. Looking at it I interpreted it to show approx 300BHP @ 1.2 Bar.

If anyone know's more about it please correct me and explain how to read the graph to me as I'm not an expert just a novice

Cheers

Tony

Your forgetting a few variables. Fuel, displacement, ignition timing and compression for starters. Power increases at a geometric rate based on these variables. The only variable you've defined is 1.2 bar. Put the same turbo on a 2 litre engine at the same preasure and you will have more BHP. Preasure alone does not indicate power. All variables working togeather do. Hope that helps confuse things. :P

I appreciate what you have said.

I had this turbo on my GTiR which was a 2 litre @ 1 bar it generated approx 300 BHP

I used 550cc injectors. Larger intercooler etc.

I am installing a new ECU so will be able to have optimum Ignition timing/ other parameters. I will have ECU programmed live whilst on rolling road. Not a generic chip. So will be tuned exactly for my engine / set up

I also looked at your thread which says you are acheiving 271 BHP at 16 PSI.

All of my ramblings are only approximations.

No worries. I know my car is not optimized by any means. I'm sure there is more power to be had if I went with a new ECU or I had the time to work with ESM on a new chip. My 271 BHP is an average and conservative at that. To go back and answer your question though, at minimum I would uprate the clutch. The stock one will handle the power though not well and not long. As a second upgrade I'd look at coils. Consistant spark as well as increased available current to cope with the higher cylinder pressures is a welcome safety net. If you plan on tracking the car a lightened flywheel will help with engine speed and powerband though this isn't really needed for street use. The same is true of an LSD. I almost forgot, the biggest and most important upgrade. Get a better boost gauge!!! Now that you'll be running over 1 BAR the oem gauge is useless. Hope this helps.

Marie any advice from somebody who has already done all the hard work is very welcome.

I have looked at new boost gauge. The Greddy profec has a digital gauge but I'm hoping to hide this from view.

Did you buy Fidanza flywheel or remove weight from Origonal flywheel?

Is your clutch on/off or can you use it around town?

I dont want to take engine to its limits as I know it expensive,

GTiR had 3 engines and 3 turbo's during 7 years I had it.

I would never consider Nitrous as I think is always a big shock to the engine.

I have been told your fuel is 102 ron whereas our premium fuel is only 97 ron

This will also make big difference

Fidanza flywheel. I hid my EBC too. Part of the reason I went to all VDO gauges was I wanted them to match as well as I wanted to keep the componentry relatively lotus. This on top of wanting a better idea of what my engine was doing rather than "...oh my gauge is at 1/4 mark". I can tell you the exact temp and preasure my engine is running at as well as when my engine is warm and sealing properly. On fuel.... 91 is the top if what's commercially available here in California. Very few states have higher. I drive my car to and from work though it's not as much driving with me being gone for days at a time. It's still very usable but it dies require some getting used to. No more dumping the clutch. You'll either stall it or break something. So far reliability ist an issue. As I said, both Ekapol and I have had this for awhile and assuming you do maintenance religiously it should last a good long time. This means proper oil change at 3K/3months and oil and plugs at 6K/6 months. This way you can identify any potential prblems eary on. As a referrance point I don't do NOS. To destructive on internals + it's illegal to have a road car with it enabled or filled here in CA.

I have similar mods on Smaug and similar experiences to Marie. Lightened flywheel deffo leads to the occasional stall from a stop; there's not much room for error. 3 Bar MAP and 550s seem to over-fuel slightly at idle, so with small throttle tip-in, mine was even more prone to die until I replaced the TurboXS dump with a recirculating type that's actually open a bit at idle; I hypothesize this reduces restriction and thus provides a slightly better mixture off idle. I'm using only an MBC at the moment, though and am also hoping for the day when Alan has an optimised chip available for the turbo conversion.
